[ It's been a long, long while since Steve transmitted a message through the network, and that's been no accident. His last announcement was when he came back from his last trip home, over a year ago. It hadn't felt right to take the lead in the same way after that, and others had jumped in to take his place as needed. Hadn't they? He'd thought as much, but others have told him that he's still needed as a leader. Maybe not as Cap, but as Steve.

It's a work in progress.

But here he is all the same, sending out his message toward the end of the second day. He's indoors; the room he's in not well-lit but his face is still visible. It's quiet out, the calm before the storm. ]

Michonne and I took a trip past the gates today, and... there's something coming. Or, well, a lot of somethings. A whole horde of zombies headed right for us. She's already given you guys the rundown, but I wanted to get the word out. We're gonna have to fight, or barricade ourselves away from danger. [ His expression hardens then, something steely and determined. ] Whatever you can do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe, do it.

[ A pause as he gathers his thoughts, and then he's back to it. ] I know death isn't permanent here, but this isn't a way that anyone wants to go. [ Is he speaking from experience?? Who knows, he doesn't elaborate. ] And I'll do whatever I can to help. In case you didn't know, I've got super strength, super speed, and I can take a hit. I'm not even sure if this infection will affect me because of the way my metabolism is. So if you need help getting out a scrape, let me know, all right? Or even if you just need help barricading a house. [ He's perfect for all that heavy lifting. ] I'm here to do whatever I can.

[ It's never enough, but he's still going to try. If he's learned anything this past year, it's that. ]

Oh, it's Steve, by the way. Steve Rogers. Stay safe, everyone.

[ With a firm nod, he ends the broadcast. For someone who's rusty on the speeches, it could have been worse, right? ]

[ HELLO WONDERLAND it's your favorite grumpy murder grandpa. What's up.

Joel had been truly shaken when he'd found Ellie alone in the woods, hiding away from the world and with a broken arm she'd been too scared to even go and get treated properly. When she'd finally told him an abbreviated version of what had happened, he'd gone from feeling shaken to feeling sick.

He'd done his own research first, to no avail. At a loss and unable to make further progress on his own, he's finally caved to his last resort - asking the other residents for help. ]

[ He scrambles with the camera for a minute, turning it around to show a leash and collar, connected to... nothing. There's nothing there. Well, there's something there, because the leash is being pulled to its limits, and there's the sound of growling coming from the end of it. ]

This is Fido. [ Billy says, as though there's anything there to be named Fido in the first place. ]

Fido, stop pulling! Fido, heel!

[ Fido does no such thing. Fido growls and barks and pulls some more. Defeated, Billy turns the camera back around. ]

Maybe I shouldn't've named him Fido. Maybe Killer is better. But he isn't listening to any name I say, so I don't think it's the name that matters. Anyway. I found him in my room, and I've never had a dog before, so I asked the closet for a leash, and I got it on him but I don't think he likes it.

[ Fido barks his displeasure. ] I know, I know! Fido, shh!

[ Billy, exasperated, ends the video. He can be found trying to take Fido for walks around the mansion grounds. Fido, for his part, doesn't want to go for a walk. He wants to growl and generally resist and sniff at the tears they pass. Those are weird, huh. ]

Gotta say, out of all the things Wonderland could've drawn from for me, this is probably the best end of the deal. So hey everybody, welcome to the Citadel. Yes, you're in space. No, you don't need a suit unless you wanna go outside, and I wouldn't recommend it.

[She swaps the video feed for a few moments to outside her surroundings, showing a crowded view of the Silversun Strip, and then back to her face.]

The Citadel's the hub of galactic government in my universe. Lots to do, lots to see. You've probably all got omni-tools, but they're pretty basic to learn. In general, try to stay away from any places that look seedy, and if it's illegal where you come from, it's probably illegal here. Otherwise, go wild. If you need directions, the holographic terminals are VI information guides. Ask 'em whatever. Or, y'know, you've got the extranet in the palm of your hands, so you can just search it yourself.

[She looks like she's gonna stop, and then grins a little bit wider.]

Oh, and one more thing...

[She steps away from the wall to show she's standing in front of a display sign. A very particular display sign.]

Alright. So in the last couple of months, I've gotten a bunch of people trying to pick my brain about my world. I've been here about a year, and it's pretty safe to say most people around here are from the 21st century. Thing is, back home, it's 2187.

[The video opens on an interesting tableau. For one, the backdrop is that of mossy-green tile, a dimly lit laboratory, complete with some extremely fake potted vegetation. And that’s to say nothing of the figures present in the frame. Standing in the forefront seems to be a lizard with glasses in a lab coat, addressing the network at large. Behind her, a small child appears to be getting devoured alive by a -

Oh, wait. No they’re not. They’re actually grinning widely as they scratch the back of the...creature’s approximation of ears. It’s unclear how many dogs this counts as. Is this even really a dog? They’re definitely frothing at the mouth, making contented little bubbling sounds as Frisk scritches them beneath their chin. There’s a heavy whapping sound of something slapping back and forth across the tile as their tail begins to wag, even if the motion leaves shiny strands of their mass dribbling across the floor.

So, you know. Like any other dog.

Alphys speaks up first.]

H-Hey everyone! So, uhm...there’s an event! Which you, uh, probably already guessed, but, in the interest of, uhm, b-being informed, there’s some...things you should know. About this place and. Everything.

[She pauses, takes a nervous glance back towards the melting beast, and continues. Frisk pauses to toss her a resolute thumbs-up and a firm nod.]

These, uhm, monsters are called the Amalgamates. There’s a couple of them, uh, d-down here, but there’s no need to fight them! They’re, uhm, probably just looking for food. They won’t attack you or anything, so y-you can leave them alone. They’re not dangerous.

[Frisk sits up a little straighter, giving the Endogeny one final, reassuring pat, as they add:]

If any of them come near you, just find some food or something for them to play with. They don't mean to hurt you.

[Their tone is firm and unwavering, as resolute as their expression. Alphys, on the other hand, seems to get more nervous the longer the broadcasts stretches on, so she just cuts right to the point.]

There’s a machine that, uhm, looks like a skull around here, it’s got some wires, and tubes, and stuff? Don’t touch it. It’s, uhm, s-super dangerous, and, doesn’t do anything...good.

[Frisk's shoulders twitch in a faint wince, their gaze dropping back to Endogeny. Nothing good, no.]

So uhm. Leave that alone, t-too.

[Just as it seems like she’s going to continue, Endogeny abruptly surges to their feet with a loud, triumphant howl. The Amalgamate barrels at the camera, sending Alphys careening off screen with a small shriek. The camera goes down with her in a haphazard tumble, but at least the last shot indicates that she is, in fact, not being eaten alive. It turns out Endogeny is simply hungry, and seeing Alphys usually means it's time she fed them.

The feed rattles one last time as Endogeny's tail whips across the screen, and goes dead.]

But now, she's considering her own death again; not because she's contemplating harming herself, but because her death is looming and unavoidable whenever she returns home. The reality of that has always been in the back of her mind since first arriving in Wonderland, and she tries not to think about it much, but maybe talking it through isn't such a bad thing. ]

You could be happy here. Having anything you desire, or being given a second chance. You could be happy, or at least not faulted for wanting to believe the dream. Dreams can be powerful, or quickly become a nightmare.

( Three guesses as to what Leliana's considering and the first two are probably correct. She knows that this is not in fact the Fade but it's the closest base of reference that she has -- somewhere that isn't quite real, where magic is more powerful than you would believe, dreams, desires. Demons. There is some influence here, and something else -- what else would want them captive? )

It would be more unsettling if we are simply left to our happiness. They take memories, feeding from us. Is that power only to feed what they do or is there more to it? What else will come, even if some have been waiting for so long?

( Perhaps some of the memories were not powerful enough, only giving a fraction of the power another memory did. Was it happiness or sadness, perhaps fear or anger? )

Would you give up something to keep this happiness going, or does fear of what may come stop that?

Now, there's just pain. Pain and... some kind of faint melody. It's too distant to make out yet, a soft buzzing at the edge of his thoughts.

After leaving his message, he abandons the lab entirely, with the intent to return to his room on the fourth floor and sleep until the illness breaks on its own. And obviously you’re more than welcome to work more than that and are exempt from working during events.

So I thought we could learn how to defend ourselves with or without weapons. But events came and went, it got delayed, and then to top it off- Well. It's done now.

Um. All right, no one panic, but I may have underestimated these magic closets of ours and accidentally... done something.

[Anders' voice, sounding contrite. In the background, an unremitting stream of noise threatens to drown him out--it's meowing, rising and falling at different pitches like a tone-deaf a cappella group trying to harmonize and failing miserably.

The camera settles unsteadily on the hem of his robes before he sets it down and steps back. The source of the caterwauling then becomes apparent: in his arms are four young cats of various shapes and color, two tucked under each arm.

By the sounds of it, more are audible off-screen. Many, many more.]

I wasn't thinking... Well, I was, I was thinking how much more homey this place would be with a cute cat or two, and then--and then they were just there, and everywhere, and now there are a few more than two. If you have cat allergies, stay off the fourth floor.

[As if on cue, a kitten on stubby legs capers across the floor behind him. Anders, noticing movement on the screen, squints closely for a second, then looks for the real thing over his shoulder.]

One's making a run for it. Alistair! Alistair, catch it, my hands are full.

[From somewhere off among the caterwauling comes a response, the owner appearing shortly after--]

I see it!

[Alistair runs past in the background, two cats under one arm and what is presumably another squirming about down his shirt. He comes back into view a moment later, the escapee cradled in his free hand. Shoving the kitten in Anders' face--where it proceeds to bat at his nose--he frowns at the other man.]

This is getting ridiculous. We can't keep track of all of them. Is anyone coming to-- Ow!

[The yelp comes as the squirming under his shirt grows more energetic and with a slightly panicked look Alistair disappears from view again, kittens in tow. The only hint as to his fate comes as an increase in the mewling and the sound of fabric ripping mercifully out of sight.]

I'm getting to that part!

[Anders stares after him, eyebrows drawn up in alarm, before dragging his eyes back to the camera.]

Uhhh, it's okay, everything's fine, we have things completely under control, but as you can tell, we're in possession of some cats who could use a loving home! Soft, furry cats! Adorable, see? They're domesticated, easy to care for, and make excellent house pets. That one doesn't appear to be a fan of Alistair's shirt, but some are more fashion conscious than others.

I don't know if I can take care of them all. If you'd like to take one, we'll be giving them away free of charge in the ballroom. First floor, you can't miss it!
[Anders then points a finger sternly, though the effect is mitigated by the wide-eyed kittens holding onto his arm.] But no funny business. If you consider cats a delicacy, I'm warning you now, we're both heavily armed. People wanting to make mittens out of their fur need not apply.

-land's influence on you. [ Good morning from the tired and faintly exasperated countenance of Robyn, who hastily replaces a wayward braid behind her ear before actually attending to the broadcast. She smiles wearily, clearing her throat before addressing the mansion. ]

Hello, Wonderland. In case we've yet to meet, my name is Robyn Cousland of the Gr- [ She cuts off momentarily to glance away, frowning, and speaks to someone or something off-camera. ] Stop. Sit.

[ There's a low whine, but she returns to the device with a satisfied, short sigh. ]

When I arrived, I... found, if it can be called that, a mabari - a Ferelden hound - in the wardrobe of my room. He isn't nearly as well-behaved as my own, unfortunately; he seems much younger, though I've just been thinking it might be because of the way that this place seems to affect us all. Though, luckily, we haven't all been taking little things from other people and hiding them away.

[ TALKING ABOUT YOU, OREN THE DOG. ]

Which... brings me to my point, which is that the dog has apparently been taking things that don't belong to him. Some of them have names written in them, some books, but most of these things have been difficult to return. I know for a fact that he confiscated possessions of an Emily Bennett, Evelyn O'Connell, and Cullen Rutherford. Also... [ At this, the Warden sifts through the pile as she speaks: ] Several boots, gloves, and gauntlets, mostly leather. A... necklace, I think, made of bone, a clay flower pot, some kind of- [ Maker's breath. She looks momentarily pained and spots of pink rise into the apples of her cheeks. ] Something... called Busty Asian Beauties, and several other things I've yet to identify.

[ The picture on the cover of that particular piece of reading material is overwhelmingly embarrassing and she hastens to end the broadcast. ]

Andraste's grace. Please stop by room thirty on the first floor if you've been missing something, or just tell me what you've lost and I will return it once I've made some sense of this mess.

What a strange place this is. There's so much magic here, and like none I've ever seen before. And this network! It's a wonderful little invention. Though not as wonderful as these closets. They gave me the most delightful pair of shoes when I asked. A bit unfashionable, but nothing that can't be changed.

It's a shame there doesn't seem to be an exit. It makes this quite the gilded cage, does it not? And one does wonder how all the magic is powered. Even with blood magic and lyrium both, this is quite the feat.

[ which, in her experience, means it's probably something terrible that will kill everyone or worse. which is what has her frowning at her device even as she makes a somewhat cheerful-sounding post. bless written missives and their ability to appear blase when leliana is too annoyed to mask her feelings entirely. ]

At the very least, I suspect this will make for an interesting story someday, no?
