Again? Really?

[She sure sounds annoyed. She'd put this on video, but she doesn't see much of a point there. Everybody's seeing much of the same thing.]

And here I thought we wouldn't have to deal with zombies again. That's what they're called, right? Zombies?

[Not being from a world with these things, she wouldn't know. And zombie movies really aren't high on her list of things to watch or look into. But she's pretty sure that's what she heard them being called earlier.]

At least they're visible this time. The again, doesn't really make it better, judging from how some of them look.

[Maybe she shouldn't be so flippant about this, but it's the only way she really knows how to be. Acting otherwise, would show that she's worried about this mess given her lack of magic at the moment.]

Don't suppose anyone has a quick fix for this one though? A spell, some sort of anti-zombie bomb, anything that would make this more tolerable?

[She's guessing no.]

Alright, so I’ve done all the reading, looked through the brochure. Really handy, by the way, more inter-dimensional kidnappings could use something like that. Nice to show up and have tourist info provided right off the bat.

[He’s doing his best to put a good face on this, he really is. Given his most recent inter-dimensional experiences, this is something of an improvement-- although all things considered, there’s nowhere he’d rather be right now than Earth, preferably with his team, although he supposes that last part is on him. He’d chosen to walk away, at least for a little while. Thanks to that decision, the first night here had been a little more difficult than it might have otherwise, but he's managing.

He’ll give Wonderland some credit. It beats solitary confinement in a parasite’s prison.]

That said, I’m not sure how I feel about a world without Wikipedia. How do you settle all the random debates that come up over breakfast without Wikipedia?

Teddy Altman, by the way. I hear I've been here before, but I don't remember any of it. Apologies in advance for that one.

I bet some of you think this is fun and enjoyable to, huh? Have at it. For those of us that would much rather we'd ended up on a Mexican beach like me, I'm going to be camped out by a fireplace with my newest play on a hot toddy and cards.

Have to say that wasn't what I expected.

[She actually seems relieved about it not being what she was expecting because...]

Honestly, given all that and given the dust, I was half expecting some sort of curse or something else that made everything worse.

[Don't get her wrong, she's glad it's not, but still.]

Seems like that's the main thing you science types do anyway. I mean really, I tried to make my own way home a while back and you didn't see any of this happening. Still think that bit with everyone floating a year ago was one of you too.

[She hadn't thought about it in a while, and didn't care when it happened, but now that she's thinking about science stuff, she's decided it bothered her.]

Not to mention that text asking about portals a few months ago, really, you don't see those of us with magic making a giant mess of everything on the regular. Can't blame you for trying to find a way out, but please, try to make less of a mess in the future. Sure the rest of us would appreciate it.

We're already in some magical land that makes our dreams come true - mostly the bad ones - so let's think about the impossible some more.

[Leonard may be calling it "impossible" mostly to heckle one specific Brit, given he's travelled through time himself, but maybe it will also flush out other time travellers. May be interesting.]

If you could travel to any point in history, where and when would you go, and why?

Also, if you could travel to any point in your own personal history, your lifetime... Same questions.

Would you try to change anything?

[Elizabeth looks rather apprehensive that the tears have suddenly appeared everywhere, but she can't quite mask her excitement at getting to explain to everyone the one area in which she is most certainly an expert - even if the information she has to offer is something most people have probably figured out for themselves by now.]

These rips in the air that have appeared - they're called tears, and they're something I can create. They're a window through the fabric of reality, and they show other versions of the world. The tears I make here can only lead to other versions of Wonderland, but I've looked through some of the ones that showed up by themselves and they led to versions of Columbia, where I came here from, too.

[She has quite a bit of distaste in her voice as she mentions Columbia.]

My main advice is to be careful. Most of the alternate realities out there are rather benign, with a thousand tiny changes possible - tea instead of coffee, or different coloured wallpaper. But there are also those that have bigger, more important variables at play, and those tears can be very dangerous. You might see people you recognise on the other side of them, but their personalities could be completely different - just keep reminding yourself that it's not really your parent, or partner, or whoever, but just another version of them. A 'what-if', it might be easiest to think of it as.

[It's very unlikely that she'll be able to heed her own advice, as sound as it seems to give it out.]

If you have any questions at all, I'm more than happy to answer them.
nascensibility: that you only meant well?!???!?! (MMMM WHATCHA SAYYY)
[personal profile] nascensibility
[There is such a thing in the sciences, in mathematics, called the relation between constants and variables.

Variables are unknown elements, that which has not yet come to pass, changing incessantly to best suit an equation. Constants are fixed, their values do not shift for better or worse. Every experiment must have a constant with which to compare for consistency, the baseline, the mainstay.

For some time she has felt less like a person and more like a fixture, another unaltered set dressing against an unaltered backdrop. A theatre full of traveling shows that ebb with the whims of a fickle audience, some more popular than others, some waning into obscurity after brief performances. They are all players, but some less so as time wears on and eventually the stage across which you might have danced is a part of you, and you a part of it.
]

I understand that many of you are no strangers to loss.

[She certainly is not, and isn't so naive to think that others have not suffered either. It was not selfish disappointment that crushed into her chest when she saw his empty room this morning after stopping by to discuss the science of space travel - for all his time away, he was still a physicist - but a sickening dread, knowing the circumstances to which he was returning.

The same as hers: death.
]

And I am not in the habit of dressing up bad news. But given the length of this particular resident's stay in Wonderland, I feel it is important for people to know that Philip LaFresque is no longer with us.

[Miraculously her voice does not quake and she thinks perhaps there might have been an inevitability at play, a knowledge they both shared that one of them would leave before the other. One of them would disappear first.]

He was the first person that I met here, almost six years ago. I dare say that he has changed a great deal, and that many of you would not recognise the man he was once, but he was my oldest and dearest friend. [Here she feels the crack in the dam, the anxiety that comes with having to use the past tense.] And I'm sorry that sounds so- so trite, and insignificant, that there is not a more appropriate word to describe it than "friend."

[Evelyn inhales steadily and chokes on the realisation that of those she knew from the very beginning, she is the only one left.]

I hope some of you will remember him fondly.

[The camera opens on Shepard standing against a display wall, with a bunch of chatter going on behind her. There's some text displayed, but it's too big to be seen through the limited scope of the video. She smiles, and mock salutes with two fingers.]

Gotta say, out of all the things Wonderland could've drawn from for me, this is probably the best end of the deal. So hey everybody, welcome to the Citadel. Yes, you're in space. No, you don't need a suit unless you wanna go outside, and I wouldn't recommend it.

[She swaps the video feed for a few moments to outside her surroundings, showing a crowded view of the Silversun Strip, and then back to her face.]

The Citadel's the hub of galactic government in my universe. Lots to do, lots to see. You've probably all got omni-tools, but they're pretty basic to learn. In general, try to stay away from any places that look seedy, and if it's illegal where you come from, it's probably illegal here. Otherwise, go wild. If you need directions, the holographic terminals are VI information guides. Ask 'em whatever. Or, y'know, you've got the extranet in the palm of your hands, so you can just search it yourself.

[She looks like she's gonna stop, and then grins a little bit wider.]

Oh, and one more thing...

[She steps away from the wall to show she's standing in front of a display sign. A very particular display sign.]

I re-maxed my high score at the Armax combat arena. I'll buy anyone who can beat me without cheating a free meal. Good luck.

What do you do when you can't sleep?
choosetruth: (this is the story we needed to write)
[personal profile] choosetruth
Are you happy here?

Don't answer immediately. Take a minute to think about it. It's a complicated question. The concept of happiness is vague and hard to define, especially if we try and generalize it for all people. Certainly, there are moments of joy to be had here. As far as cages go, the gilding on this one can't be denied. Anything you want for free? The ability to come back to life without a hunger for human flesh? Eternal youth? No one is starving to death here. Everyone has a bed and a roof. Compared to a lot of the places people come from, this place is downright utopian even including the events. I know I'm dead at home. That's almost enough to counterbalance the lack of internet. Almost.

There are a lot of reasons to be happy here. All we're giving up is freedom, and how many of us even really have that at home? It's the permanent all-expenses-paid resort vacation no one asked for, and time isn't moving so it's not like we're even missing anything.

You know who was especially happy here? The people who lived in the Wonderland we all dreamed about in December. The ones who didn't remember ever living anywhere else. Talk about a happy ending. No one fighting, no one in pain, everyone living every day in pure, ignorant bliss.

I've called Wonderland a lie before, and I maintain it, but it's the worst sort of lie because it's so very tempting to believe it. Would it really be so bad to give in and just be happy? Why fight it when it isn't our call, when we are powerless to do anything but try and survive whatever Wonderland throws at us?

I say bliss is overrated. What's the point of being happy when you aren't yourself anymore? Is it really a vacation if you have no choice but to take it? There's so much here that we know isn't right. If we give in to being happy, we risk complacency, and if we get complacent, we risk losing the opportunity to rise up when we can.

I'm not saying you shouldn't enjoy the good times Wonderland gives us. God knows they're few and far between. Be happy. Just never forget everything Wonderland gives us is the equivalent of giving a favorite pet a nice toy. Wonderland is pampering us because it is using us. The minute we forget that is the minute Wonderland owns us. None of us are free. Never forget that.

So am I happy here?

It doesn't fucking matter.

degree of success is unimportant-- i'm looking for anything pertaining to travel into wonderland, out of it, within it, to the mirror side, etc.

[ Well.

This is unfortunate.

If Henry could have never stepped foot on Neverland again, that would have been just fine. How does this place go from something awesome like Hogwarts to terrifying perma-dark terror island so easily? At least the knows this time, and after realizing some adults have gone completely haywire and turned into Lost Boys Ones, and some people haven't, he decides he has to address the people who are still logical and have devices. Technically speaking, this could be his mom's memories, but he's guessing waking up in Skull Rock A.K.A. The Place He Ripped Out His Heart That One Time means this is all on him. ]

So, we're in Neverland. From my memories.

I'm really sorry.

[ At least he had no control over this one. THIS IS NOT HIS FAULT. ]

You probably noticed some adults are now kids, like my age-ish. That's because now they're Wonderland's Neverland version of Lost Boys. It was just boys who felt unloved who turned into them before. [ Let's ignore that this means he momentarily turned into one. ] But I guess if people ever felt that way in their lives, now it means they're reverting back to kids. And they're violent. They don't care about anything. Peter Pan is evil, at least he is in this version. He was here, in Wonderland, a couple years ago. Maybe you remember him?

If you get hurt by any arrows or knives or prick your finger on a thorn, it's...that's bad. Dreamshade is a poison and just about anything that can be a weapon is laced with it. I'm sorry. I'm really, really sorry.

[ He doesn't know about the magic healing water so people might have to go to Regina for that, or discover it on their own and the fact that once you drink the water and are healed, can't move very far away from it or you'll die. ]

Pan likes tricks, and so this place is full of them. You might...see people who aren't really here. If you can, stay in big groups and don't wander into the jungle alone.

[ He managed to poof himself out of Skull Rock and onto the beach so that the water is his background. What's that just behind his shoulder? A mermaid appears briefly, then ducks back under the waves. ]

Hopefully, this won't last as long as the last two events...

Recently I realized I've been here over a year now. At least, I think so. With the way Wonderland alters our memories, it's hard to be absolutely sure about anything.

This time last year, I was supposed to be going to my new school. It was supposed to cultivate my talent as a nurse and make me become even better at nursing. It was supposed to make me a better person.

So I guess what I'm asking is, what do you think it takes to make someone 'better' than they are?

and then it was over. and she was back to being a gem, as if it had never happened, and was she supposed to forget that? forget that form, that body when she could remember it clearly. this is probably not bothering anyone else, but it's bothering her, and she isn't sure how to bring it up or discuss it or anything.

so she goes to her own stand-by... being bitter.]

Log Date... [she pauses, suddenly realizing she has no idea what the date even is anymore, and then goes on.] Undated Log zero-dash-zero-dash-one.

This is a public transmission from Peridot. Full designation "Peridot Facet-2F5L Cut-5XG," a gem formerly of Homeworld and currently of Earth. Allied with the Crystal Gems. [a snort escapes her- the sound pained] See that's the important word there- Gem. That's what I am. I can deny and change my intended purpose until my form dissipates, but I can't stop being a gem, am I right?

[another noise, this one more pained than the last.] As the last few days will attest, I am not right. At all. It seems whatever machinations Wonderland has in place cannot only take our memories, toy with our minds and sense of reality, and keep us locked on this miserable planet that's a poor copy of Earth, but it can also change our entire make-up on a whim. And who's to say it has to change us back? Are there people who've been stuck like this? [her voice rises, hysterical in pitch] Is this why there's a lizard that talks?? I've never seen a lizard that can speak on Earth! They just crawl around and do things with their tongues! I know, because I followed one around for most of an Earth cycle once out of sheer boredom! Maybe he was once a human, and Wonderland decided, "Why don't I just make him a lizard? It'll be great!"

[she stops mid-rant, unsure of where she was even going with this. she's fine. it's okay. she just... needed to vent about it. publicly. now the healing can begin?

He's far enough away from the camera for it not to make such a huge difference, anyway, the device positioned on the far corner of his desk as he scribbles something down on a sheet of paper, its contents obscured to the viewer.

Those with sharp eyes might spot the corners of several papers tacked to his walls featuring scribbled messages that may seem eerily familiar for anyone who's come into extended contact with Mr. Kralie here, but the content of his message is what's meant to be the vital thing here.

He doesn't look up as he speaks, gaunt and shadowed eyes riveted on whatever it is he's writing.]

So I had a little chat with the Queen. Y'know, the chick that allegedly runs this place, rules the mirrors, yadda yadda yadda.

[Static spritzes momentarily over the feed, multicolored bars bisecting his features before the video jumps back to normal. Alex seems to have anticipated this, and resumes speaking when the digital fit is done.]

I won't bore you with the details. But, uh, she said something pretty interesting.

[He's got footage of the event itself, because why wouldn't someone as rampantly paranoid as he not be filming it, but there's no way to display it without revealing his own offer to the Queen, in which he proposed that he serve as a pair of her eyes on the Real side. As it is, he'll simply have to say it directly and hope people believe him, because it's real freaking shady, what she just implied.]

She said she's got eyes on our side. People watching things out for her. Had some real, or maybe I should say Real, "capable help" at her disposal.

[For the first time, he eyes the camera coldly, suspiciously. As if his paranoia needed to be ratcheted up further.]

Now why would she say a thing like that?

[Private video - filtered to Literally Everyone But Asriel and Toriel]

Greetings, Wonderland!

[Announced brightly and cheerily. There's someone new in town! Chara is PANICKING, and this manifests itself in clear and obvious ways: a placid, polite smile and a camera that only jitters slightly, because they're multitasking. Occasionally, a ridiculously twee cupcake backpack peers into frame, because Chara is cramming every treasured possession they have into it while they talk.]

Let me make this straightforward and simple. Another new friend has arrived into our fold. I trust you'll all be welcoming to him.

Don't tell Asriel I'm here.

If you so much as mention my name to him, I will know. I will find you. I will kill you, and I will wait tenderly and patiently over your fallen, disgusting corpse until it rises again. I will sink a knife in and twist, so the very first thing you feel upon your revival is unspeakable pain. I'll cut away every life that you have remaining in this place, and then I will go hunting for everyone you love.

I hope I have made myself clear. Understand, for once, I make this demand from a place of mercy. I distance myself for everyone's good. Sabotaging that would not be advisable; I've been told I'm a little bit dangerous when I have nothing left to lose.

[Private video to Toriel, because of course Mom gets a nicer version lmao]

Ma'am. I hope you're well. You must be happy. You must be excited!

I hope I don't dampen your elation, but I have decided it would be for the best if I give Asriel some space. I... I was responsible for his death. I believe it would be much easier on him if he were given some time to adjust to Wonderland before the bombshell of my continued existence is dropped on him. It would be a lot to take in at once, would it not?

Please, don't mention my name to him. Give it some time, at the very least. I'm going to make myself as scarce as Wonderland will permit. Think of it like... a vacation. It'll be fun!

Try to understand. I'm not trying to be dramatic or attention-seeking. I've made this choice because I feel it will be easier on Asriel.

[Action]

[True to their word, they've removed every last trace of themselves from Room 12 and fuckign BOLTED. The problem of where to go is a little trickier, since there's really no getting away from Wonderland. Just sprint out into the woods until they've gone Too Far Out? Hide in a cave and hope nobody finds them?

...They go to the diner. Diners were safe places to hide out when they ran away before they fell. Souji said they could work there. There's food, and the booths are soft enough to grab quick snatches of sleep in. They can duck into the kitchen, and even if it's sterile and commercial rather than homey, it's still a kitchen.

They've seated themselves on the floor behind the counter, tucked away out of sight. They're... emptying salt shakers onto the floor with an absent smile on their face. Even they don't know why they're doing it.]
