Back in the summer of last year I made inquiries about the experiences of Wonderland residents who hail from time periods before a more "modern" era, in the hopes of creating a guide that might best facilitate the transition for them to contemporary advances. The project fell through for a number of reasons not long after-

[Primarily because she left, died, and came back, which tends to put a bit of a damper on personal research, but that is not known by the general public.]

-but I am happy to have produced a pamphlet that I hope the rest of you might circulate with the...ah, existing one [that nondescript abomination] should you meet someone unfamiliar with the communications devices, or the appliances in the kitchen.

Please feel free to refer anyone with questions about bookkeeping and records to me, I've recently reorganised our archives in the west wing of the library.

[With that, Evelyn cuts the feed.

The project came as a distraction more than anything, something that had been pushed to the backburner in her grief, practically forgotten while she dragged herself through the days following her death in August. Being someone with an immense proclivity to work that others might find tedious or mind-numbing she weighed the options before her following the morning six days ago when she had woken up to find her bed empty again, the only belongings left behind a linen shirt and a cup of cold Turkish coffee on the counter.

It almost came as no surprise as she had sluggishly poured the beverage out in the sink, rinsing the porcelain. Why should it, anymore?

Later in the day Evelyn can be found in the unlikeliest of places: Wonderland's fifth floor bar, drowning dismay with whisky and rye.]

It's good, though I think that most people won't know what a fortnight is. [A beat before he hastily adds:] I know it's two weeks, but like, Mabel wouldn't know.

[Just so she knows he's still smart enough to know big words!]

Speaking as a very new person, it is very useful to have that pamphlet. It sums it all up in a constructive way.

I am from a time period where this technology is all pretty common place, but I still like there's a pamphlet available.

[John sees the post earlier in the day, but doesn't comment. It's a good idea, but his two cents don't matter much.

He puts it out of his mind and goes about his buisness as per usual. It only resurfaces hours later when the general peace and normalcy of the bar is interrupted by the librarian. He hesitates for a moment, eyeing Evie out the corner of his eye. It's a little concerning to see her here- something smells.

A few minutes later, John plunks a bottle of good old fashioned Jack in front of her, and pulls up a chair like he was invited.]

You look like you need it.

I did make this with the express purpose of filling in gaps for those from older time periods,

[she informs him gently, recalling a conversation she once had with someone who said that she spoke like "an SAT reading comprehension section," whatever that was.]

Is "fortnight" no longer in the modern lexicon?

You are new indeed, as we have yet to meet until now.

[Evelyn very much likes to familiarise herself with new arrivals, and not simply because people tend to nudge them toward the library regardless.]

If you don't mind my asking, what is the year in your world?

[Talking skeletons should not, of course, bother her by any stretch of the imagination. Particularly not with her skillset and experience. There is still something very odd about creatures lacking lungs and vocal cords having the capacity for audible speech.

The charade of astonishment has gone on long enough, anyway, and is now bordering on rudeness.]

...I don't believe we've met.

[Well that was certainly an awkward silence.]

...uh. yeah. don't believe we have.

[The last person Evelyn would expect to demonstrate any real semblance of empathy in her presence is John Winchester, who seats himself at her corner table as though they were on friendly terms. Almost immediately she recoils, leaning back in her chair to look between him and the bottle as though expecting a catch to sucker-punch her at any moment.

Within seconds she decides that bristling isn't entirely worth the effort, visibly sagging in defeat and pulling the liquor closer to examine the label.]

"Need" is a subjective term. I don't need to drink.

[This statement does not, however, stop her from unscrewing the cap and pouring herself a few fingers' worth of Tennessee whisky.]

what are these books called?

( yup, that's it. not, thanks for the information. not, why can't you put metal in the magic heat boxes. just the first is fine, thanks. )

and what's this about mirrors? there's another bloody world? how do we get there?

[Well. Once Alistair figures out how to get his magic box to show him the pamphlet that is pretty handy. Really handy and eye opening. There are magic boxes that cook food? How has he not found this out yet? He looks suitably impressed when he chimes in with his input on the topic.]

Wow. Uh, thanks for this. Are you taking questions? Because I have some. Like why don't the magic cooking boxes like metal? What happens if I accidentally put some in there?

[Because there is a fair chance of him deciding to try that if he's not told that it will led to the thing getting possessed and trying to kill everyone or something.]

Oh, wow. This is so much better than the other one.

[ not that jane hadn't had her own personal darcy in place of any literature on the matter. still, evelyn's probably seen jane in more than just the science/physics stacks. ]

Are you planning on expanding it at all? Not that-- you know, there's any obligation of course. I just mean that if anyone was primed to do it...

[ ...evelyn is kind of known, that is. ]

Well it's way better than the other one for any time period. [Who needs that many swearwords?] But no. We mostly just... say two weeks.

[There are actually a lot of pretty big words in there, but that's the only one that seems especially archaic. To Dipper, at least.]

[she asks without thinking, because as a linguist the first thing that comes to mind is French.]

[Evelyn was certain she would continue to make both addendums and amendments to the pamphlet in the weeks to come, but it was best to get something out in the public sphere, at the very least. The text from an unknown name makes a point of that, and she didn't expect too much in the way of "thanks" in the first place.]

"The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass."

The Mirror side is not a place that we can access by ourselves - they can see us through the looking glasses, but we cannot see them. On occasion, during some events, they may cross to this side. In doing so we are immediately transported to their side. In past experiences it has more often appeared that two versions of a person - Mirror and Real - may not be present on the same side at the same time.

When they return to their side, we are returned to ours.

[A new face and one unfamiliar with the technological advances, both at once! Evelyn's own experience with microwaves is violent and involves spontaneous combustion.]

They'll begin to spark, a bit like lightning on a smaller scale, and tend to burst into flames shortly thereafter, which also sets the microwave itself on fire.

I would strongly recommend against it.

[Here is the apologetic grimace, and one that Jane might best recognise as belonging to a fellow academic with a compulsion to do one's very best in one's work.]

I am something of a perfectionist, [Evelyn admits, albeit grudgingly.] I very much intend to make both addendums and amendments as they arise.

[ jane receives the grimace with a small smile of her own. ]

If it helps someone, it's worth it. Especially for people from worlds outside Wonderland's bias.

[ If she's still in the bar at any point later in the night after her post, Chuck will be joining her. He hasn't had much to drink since being here and wandering in to find a bar? Fuck yeah. It's time to go to town.

He's sort of surprised to see her there though, she didn't strike him as the type.

Then again, she didn't strike him as the type to spar, either. So there you go. ]
