Greetings. My name is Toriel. I am... new to Wonderland, apparently. I am also a monster.

I do not know much about this place yet, but. It is my understanding that most of you here are humans. You may have already seen some of my kind around here, but as many of us can look very different, I still would like to remind you. There is no need to be intimidated. I am just a- wait, did I...

[She trails off, and there's the sound of footsteps getting closer- the obstruction comes away, to reveal her face, smiling a bit.]

I am sorry, I have never been terribly good with these things. Anyway, I am just a silly little lady, and I do not mean you any harm. I look forward to getting to know all of you.

[Toriel pauses again, her expression sombering slightly.]

Also... to anybody from the birthday party that I interrupted. I am terribly sorry. I did not mean to cause such a scene.

[Mmmmmmmm it's not really Undyne's place to forgive Toriel, it's Frisk's. It was their party. So Undyne... doesn't have anything to say about that. She's still a little pissed, actually, but not even at Toriel anymore. Just at Wonderland. Which is business as usual.]

The humans here are pretty understanding, for the most part. You might get some weird questions, but no one's started an angry mob yet, at least.

[Maybe they can start over.]

[Ah- Toriel thinks she recognizes this monster. She kind of wishes she didn't. She... really doesn't like that anyone saw her like that. It wasn't a proud moment.]

I did not expect them to. Some humans are capable of unspeakably horrible acts, but... on a whole, I have always believed them to be kind at heart.

Have you talked to Frisk yet?

[It would probably polite for Dipper to introduce him at this point. But nah.]

[That would be nice, wouldn't it? She could do with some laughs, really. Some real ones, not... not what she'd been doing before.]

No. I have not.

[She doesn't want to. It's the last thing in the world she wants to do.]

Are you a friend of theirs?

[The young human in the responding video feed looks very curiously at her screen. Maybe she's never seen a monster before?

In actuality, River is just thinking very, very hard about what to say.]

Connotations... being what they are, it's hard to... I'm trying to think of, what to say, when "monster" as a word takes on more ambiguous meaning, given interdimensional nuance, and saying I've met monsters would be... false.

[Her hands begin to slowly gesture as she struggles with what she's trying to articulate. God, but no one would call this girl articulate.]

Monstrous, no. Not with the meaning given to me. But we're opening new channels, we're... a great bubble where anything means anything and most things mean nothing.

Been thinking this a lot lately. The quality of literalness is subjective. Taken to new levels of opposition. People say monster to me, they say... something... different. Than what you say. Than what... Chara says.

[Her hands snap together and start wringing themselves. She bites at her lip.]

She tries not to say things wrong, but it's pointless, isn't it? Start over. Toriel. I'm called River.

That's a pretty optimistic way of looking at things, considering our history with humans.

[Undyne may Live In Their World now (when she's not moonlighting as a captive of Wonderland) but that doesn't mean she hasn't gotten over years of bias and general mistrust. That might take more time.]

[Ah, this one- there's a small chuckle, as she remembers the punchline. Perhaps she can change it up, though?]

I am sorry to cut you off, but I think I have a bit too much on my plate right now to listen to jokes about dishes.

[A few more laughs, though... it dies off a little too soon. Somewhat regretful. That joke... it may have hit just a little too close to home, actually.]

I believe our history may have been somewhat distorted by your ruler. Many of the humans on the surface lived peacefully with monsters.

Unfortunately, even one human with cruel intentions can pose a dire threat to our race.

[Even a child.]

[Toriel... is somewhat concerned for this child. In her experience, children don't normally talk like this. Really, she doesn't think she's ever met anybody that talked like this.

That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it inherently. She does not know enough about this child to say what the long musings about the nature of monsters and language mean about her well-being, if this is normal for her or if perhaps she may require some kind of help.

Perhaps she might- but it would be rude of Toriel to assume, to just ask what's wrong with her, when there may be nothing wrong at all- it may simply be a quirk of her personality. The thought never crosses her mind to ask- she simply recognizes that it might be a possibility she should be aware of.]

Would you like to tell me anything about yourself, so that we can get to know each other?

Yep. They're a super cool kid. Told me some pretty great things about you. [There's a note of accusation in his tone--Toriel has not really lived up to their words.] Something about you being "everything a mother should be?" Kinda didn't realize that included setting people on fire, but hey. Who am I to judge?

I have spent maybe an hour with this child. I am not their mother. I attempted to be. To welcome them into my home and to care for them, but in the end... [She doesn't really want to talk about this. But there's another child here, unaware of the danger they're in. Just like with Asgore, she needs to at least try and warn them.] They killed me without a second thought.

I think that you should reconsider being friends with them.

I think I can make my own choices about who to be friends with.

[Like Frisk is anywhere near the most dangerous friend he's made. By a long shot.]

Look, I've known them a few months now and I can say for a fact that that's not who they are. [In their current timeline, anyway. But he's not sure how well the "they went back in time and spared you" explanation will go over with her.]

Besides, you seem pretty alive to me. Just talk to them. Things are... complicated.

[He knows Wonderland makes that complicated, and that she wouldn't be the first person to show up here that should be dead. But maybe she doesn't know that yet.]

[Alphys is... a pretty forgiving person, all things considered, but she also doesn't really know how to approach this. It takes her a While to get up the courage to actually respond. Maybe this can still be okay?]

It's, uhm... t-there's a lot to explain, uh, I think. B-But the humans here are, uhm, really nice, f-for the most part. They've been good to u-us.

I believe I only know one skeleton. I have seen the other but I do not think we have really gotten a chance to talk yet.

I am sorry, but I do not know anyone by those names yet. Are they other monsters? Because not all monsters know each other.

I'm sorry! I-It was wrong of me to assume you all knew each other! I'm sorry for being so prejudiced!
