It's strange. When you're out in the muck and the mess of the war you find yourself dreaming of getting away from it, but then you end up in a place like this with glowing magic traps and you think, "Ah, you know, maybe it weren't so bad back there!"

Given the various reactions so far, I'd have to speculate that this isn't normal. Even for a place such as this. Despite my short stay here, I've managed to gather that most events - as wildly unpredictable as they are - have some order to them. Whether that order intuitively makes sense or not is subject to debate, of course.

This seems a bit ... chaotically sporadic, if you will.

[ there's a pause, and the tone remains pleasant, though it does sound a bit more curious now and much less authoritative. ]

Has this happened before? This variety of chaos? Looking at the reactions of others, I'd assume that's a "no", but... it doesn't hurt to ask, after all! Are we all just lucky winners of a contest we didn't enter?

[ After the past few events, Caitlin feels like they all could do with being a little more prepared. Or at least, they could do with knowing who to go to for certain issues. She's already well-aware of the scientific community in the mansion, but there are other fields, right? Others who can lend a hand with... anything.

So she's trying to appear very professional here, in her lab. With her lab coat on.

Hi! So, a while back, Claire made a post asking if there were any other medical professionals here. And given the flavor of the last few... [ how does she phrase this ] incidents, I thought it may be useful to get an idea of who can do what around here.

[ She waves a hand, as if to cut off the question. ]

And I'm not asking if you have any special powers or anything. Though if you do, kudos. Even more so if you're comfortable talking about and using yours. [ Cause she is decidedly not. ] Think more along the lines of skills. Talents. Things you have specialized training in. That kind of thing. This way, when things go a particular sort of pear-shaped, we may all have an idea of who can help.

A sentiment such as this may constitute as strange and unusual when the woman in question is an archaeologist who encounters bodies with frequency in her work, but those bodies tend to be 1.) dead, 2.) thousands of years old, and 3.) unmistakably mummified. Evelyn’s experiences with finding bodies in Wonderland is that they are only sometimes dead, very young by comparison, and do not resemble the human equivalent of a prune.

[The past weeks and months have been nothing but complicated for Cami, to say the least. She's found out a terrible truth in her future back home, and given her conversation with Freya upon the woman's return, it's safe to say there are probably a few more unwanted discoveries lurking out there, in the darkness. She's slept and she's dreamed, and maybe that's a terrible promise to come too. She wants something better. Something simpler.

So she commandeers an empty room on one of the mansion's higher floors, just for the night. A few are burning, most aren't. There's enough light to see in the room itself, but not so much that it overwhelms the glow of each individual flame.

[Midnight mass. Listening to Kieran lead his congregation to celebrate a miracle. Voices singing in joy. The beauty of the service, and the candles glistening in the dark. Cami takes a moment to regain her thoughts, giving the phone a quick glance before continuing on.]

I've set up this room in case anyone wants a place to reflect tonight. It's on the ninth floor, room four. This isn't a religious service or anything like that. Just...somewhere where there can be peace.

[And tonight, she needs that, because the reality is? Cami's set up this place for herself. She swallows just to keep her expression calm, then reaches towards a jar at the end of the table with long, thin wooden matches inside. She picks one to light with the fire of a candle already burning before turning back to those three candles in the center. She touches the match to each one, sparking a flame before moving on to the next. Three candles, three lives.

Three deaths.

She doesn't say their names. She simply blows out the match when the task is done before turning off the video. She'll spend most of her night in that room, sitting on one of the benches regardless of whether anyone joins her, watching the lights, and listening to the silence.]

If there's one thing I've learned about Wonderland in the weeks that I've been forced to start calling it home: it's that it lies to you.

But so do lots of people, right? Everyone has a reason to lie. Some people lie to hurt other people, but some people lie out of kindness. Some people try to protect you with comforting falsehoods. How do we know that Wonderland isn't lying for our own good?

I can't tell you that. I don't know Wonderland's motivations, if there even is any sort of guiding intelligence behind it and not just pure chance.

What I can tell you is this: it doesn't matter. Lying out of kindness is just as bad as lying out of cruelty. Possibly even worse. Comforting falsehoods might be nicer in the moment than cruel truths, but I'll take the truth every time. Is it better to spare a family by telling them their dying child might get better? Or to allow them to cherish the time they have left? Is it better to tell someone their writing is good? Or send them an honest critique that could let them actually improve until you could say so without it being a lie?

Is it better to lose the memories that have hurt you and spend a weekend in blissful ignorance? Or hold onto every iota of the pain that has built you and remember exactly why you fight? Lies won't take the time to heal you. Only the truth can do that.

Wonderland is the biggest lie I've ever seen. I cannot promise a way out of this gilded, wonderful cage. That would be a lie, even if it's one I'd like to believe. I can only promise that I'll do everything I can to find the truth all of those lies are working at concealing. I won't quit until I uncover all the secrets Wonderland is hiding.

Or until Wonderland gets tired of all the prodding and sends me home. Here's hoping, right?

Hey, Wonderland. For the new people, my name's Sam, and since you might've not had the "demons 101" talk, that's what I'm getting into today. Veterans can tune me out... or listen in, I guess, if you need a refresher. I'm doing this now also since all the demons from my world aren't around to be dicks about it.

[ Thank God for that. ]

My friend Bobby said once that demons are just "ghosts with an ego," and that's true, but they're also really dangerous. They used to be human and got... messed up in Hell, so with most demons - let's just say all demons to make it simple - there's no appealing to their human nature. They're all about carpe diem when they get up to the surface again and not much stops them from having their sadistic ragers unless they've got another agenda.

[ So stop trying to be friends with demons, people. ]

They don't really have a form of their own, so they appear like black smoke unless they're possessing someone. If you think someone's possessed, you can test it out: holy water, salt, and iron will injure them where it obviously wouldn't hurt a human. You can get them stuck in a devil's trap if you're smart about it and can exercise them after that... though, honestly, I'm not sure it'd work here. Wonderland doesn't seem to have a direct line to Hell. Still, it'd at least get them out of whoever they were possessing, but you have to have the time to go through the whole song and dance. I attached an image of a devil's trap and the text for the exorcism so you've got them. The devil's trap... can just be drawn, so it's usually a good idea to put one under something like a welcome mat, or up on the ceiling above your doorway.

[ Sam pauses, frowning. ]

It can be hard to manage hope. [ She speaks quietly, before ending the broadcast. ]

Ah, here? Oh, thank you, Evelyn.

[The video opens on what appears to be, for all intents and purposes, a completely ordinary middle-aged man with an impressively crooked nose and dark eyes that shine when the light catches them. His greying hair sweeps back at the temples, faintly balding on the top but still thick at the sides, and the smile he offers to someone off-screen as he realises the device is now working is small and neatly hides his teeth.]

I should be fine. I will let you know if I begin to struggle again.

[Then, to the camera itself.]

I assume that I'm now addressing the current residents of Wonderland. My name is Regis, and I have recently found myself amongst you. If anyone is familiar with the name Emhyr var Emreis, as anyone from the same time and place as myself ought to be, or if anyone is familiar with me.. I would appreciate immediate contact.

[The man pauses, just for a moment.] Though I have found a very helpful individual here, it never pays to limit one's sources of information. I would benefit by learning as much about this world as I can, and so I ask anyone listening to inform me of anything that they believe it important for a newcomer to know. Thank you.

[Another pause, and the video tilts towards a nearby stack of books as Regis can be distantly heard asking Evelyn how he might turn the thing off. A moment later, he manages to do just that.]
