[She's not surprised by his words, at least at first. He's a good guy, and he always seems to know just what to say. But as someone as touch-starved as she is, the little pat to her head is what shocks her (hope he doesn't get any chocolate on his hand). That's when his words really sink in, things he didn't have to say, yet they are things he means. There's no a doubt in her mind that he always speaks the truth, even when it would hurt.
