[ he knows what her reaction signifies if not the full explanation of its context; he knows it in himself and he can guess to its meaning. the thought of anyone knowing what is precious to him, of even holding her name in their mouth makes him fear with anxiety. the thought of her alone and unguarded without him is a distress he can hardly bear minute to minute, let alone for the uncertain eternity they have here.

rose answers and he blinks past that uproar of grief and terror and choking empathy filling up his throat.

klaus glances down and then says,
