I take it the vague message we received from a rodent today is the type of unhelpful missive people have warned me lead to events?

How does one typically prepare themselves when you've no idea what's about to happen?

Yeah well, truth is? I'm not keen on letting them win. We have to find a way, work on making things happen the way we want them to. Otherwise you're right, there's nothing left to hope for. Not letting this place put me in that place. Are you?

Absolutely not. I intended to be as productive and available as I can while I'm here. I'm glad to know you'll be doing the same.

[ Well, maybe not exactly the same. But she likes the sound of his determination. ]

I have an incredibly difficult time trying to think of the redeeming qualities of this place. The more I hear at times, the less inclined I am to think of it as comfortable at all.

You wouldn't be the first to think such a thing, nor to say it. I have similar misgivings.

[But.. misgivings have little use, when you can't escape the place that thrusts them upon you.]

The comfort is convincing, but don't let it fool you.

Of course, I've met some who think of this as a refuge from their own home, no matter how dire things come to be in Wonderland. It makes me curious about their home lives.

Yeah. ...Yeah, that's true.

[He can't find the words to say "but I'm never really optimistic ever, even outside Wonderland" because that's a little awkward to just throw into a conversation like that, so he directs the whole thing back to her.]

So, uh. Is that usually what you do? Try and be optimistic about things?

I've noticed the same. There are some things I am glad to escape from, but.. given the choice, I would go back.

[He has.. things to do. Responsibilities he can't abandon.]

All we can do here. Least the way I see it.

[Which may not be the same as she does, but so long as they are doing something that mattered, right?]

At least until we learn what is behind this all.

In general, I suppose I'm an optimist of sorts. But I've seen war and the worst of it. That tends to dull things. And my own experience, being stuck in a time that's outside of anything I know leaves one with less optimism than usual.

[ Still, though, she hadn't thrown in the towel. ]

I suppose the fact that I'm still here is enough reason to say I've persisted despite lacking any obvious optimism about it.

[ Maybe it's more about being sure you keep existing than it is about being happy. If you make it another day, isn't that enough? ]

I would as well. I realize time has frozen, but it can't stand still forever. I have a duty. And I have a husband.

I think we may see similarly. At least on this point.

I hope there comes a day when we know what exactly the point is of all this and can go home. Or stay, if some people wish it, but at least to be given a choice.

The idea of time remaining frozen in my absence has never been a comforting one.

Has it not? I would have assumed it would help ease the mind of people worried loved ones thought they'd suddenly gone missing.

[ Time is definitely marching forward in the 20th century while Claire is stuck in the 18th, and she wonders, often, what Frank believes happened to her. ]

Yeah...yeah, I guess that makes sense. It's definitely better than, you know. Not doing that.

[He chuckles awkwardly but it's true. Wirt's felt that so many times, that weird cynical sense of self preservation.]

So, um...any optimistic guesses about this one?

I can't say I even know where to being. My first event was simply a ski resort, but this feels a bit more ominous. I'll assume it's time to break me in properly. But on an optimistic note, it won't last forever.

I guess that's true. I've been here a couple of years and usually it's like...four or five days? Sometimes it's a week though and sometimes the holidays just take over December, but...that's not really too different from home, aside from the magic stuff.

[Christmas gets longer and longer every year.]

The magic of this place does tend to put a rather unique spin on the otherwise mundane. Someone once told me it makes it so there's never a dull moment. I suppose that's true, for better or worse.

That is one side of it. [He will bow his head to that - though there are not many people to miss him, he is relieved that his sister won't have to worry about where he is. She insists on regular letters, and the last time he went missing she sent Hawke into the Deep Roads after him...]

But, as you say, there are things to be done. Obligations. And stories of magic meddling with time are not ones which ever end well.

Yeah. I mean, I don't always think about it at the time? It's more like I look back on some of it and go "huh, wow, that was actually kind of weird".

But to be fair, like...some of the events do that to you. They make you think everything is super normal even when it's not.

That's the point right there. It's got to be about choice, and without this bullshit of having to worry about losing people you care about between one moment and the next.

What do you mean? How can you think something is normal even when it's not?
