[The feed opens in Kat's room. She's standing -- well, more like posing in front of her closet in full-on 90s skater girl clothes (caught a glimpse of the outfit on a magazine, figured why not?), complete with a skateboard. She has never skateboarded in her life, probably. (She's pretty sure about that one. There's no sense of familiarity when she looks at the skateboard. Give her a carburetor, though. Watch her assemble it in like a minute.)

Anyway, this tiny young woman looks like a teenager on a good day, and in this outfit, she looks 15 at best. In any case, she's got a grin on her face like she's been laughing at a good joke for the past 5 minutes.]

This place is pretty sweet! [That's half a lie. She thinks it's cool but she also Really Wants to Go Home before she forgets home altogether.] I'm like 90% sure I don't know how to use this stuff, though, so if somebody wants to teach me, I'm a quick study. It'll take an hour tops.

[Is she joking?? Because that sounds fake. But no, she means it.]

Or someone could teach me how to swim. I bet I can get the sweetest swimsuit outta this closet. Or a surfboard. I'm soooo ready to learn how to surf.

[She's been cooped up in her room for most of the past few days, writing down and/or sketching everything she remembers about home and the team before she forgets it.

( which is. exactly when there's the soft rap of knuckles at her door, and a ten-year old standing right outside in superman swim trunks with a blue towel over his shoulders. )

There's different strokes, right? If you know any of those like, advanced ones, you could show me those.

Oh, right! Like the backstroke, the breaststroke, and the butterfly stroke. Sure, I can do that.

Awesome. I'll hit you up when I'm done learning the basics.

I haven't skateboarded in awhile, but I think I remember the basics, maybe. Do I have to go full nineties, though? I'm a little Lisa Frank'd out...

Sure, but I don't know who Lisa Frank is, so I'm gonna say no. I'm not really feeling this whole 90s look, so gimme ten and I'll meet you at the front door?

Oh, you don't want to practice inside? [ hmm. ] There probably isn't much clear pavement right now, and I bet we could convince the mansion to give us a room.

Whoa, hold on. The mansion can do what the closets do?

Dude, you think we can get a skate park? That'd be pretty sick.

OK, you said you can be ready in ten? Meet me at the coffee shop and I'll explain while we look for an open room.

[ and sure enough he'll be standing in front of said cafe with a donut halfway in his craw. you need sugar to board, yo. ]

[She knows where that is, so she's there right in time, dressed much more decade-appropriate jeans, shirt, hoodie, and sneakers.]

[Yeah she just drops it like that, like it's the kind of joke she makes every day. It kind of is.]

[ he only looks about 13% sheepish because the rest of his brain is trying to figure out what kat's deal is. ]

'm Wuh! [ yikes. swallow first. handshake after. ] Sorry-- hi. I'm Ray! What's it like to not know what you know?

[ sidewalk surfing is just about coming into existence -- back in her decade and back in california. and peggy has certainly only seen it at a distance. even then, those contraptions don't perfectly resemble the sleep apparatus in kat's hand. doesn't matter; it's not the skateboard that draws her attention.

Sounds as though you're amassing quite the to-do list.

[Kat may not remember her history, but she does know when someone looks like they're not from around here. Granted, like, no one's from around here if they're living in the mansion, but this is different. Even so, Kat's not going to treat her any differently. Nope, just the same old Kat as everyone gets at first.]

I mean, we're stuck here, right? Gotta keep busy somehow. Might as well learn some new tricks while I'm at it.

Quite the contrary. It's something I imagine a lot of us do -- only usually not quite so a la carte.

[You'll have to forgive Kat. She's... sometimes she just doesn't get what people say tbh.

So she just changes the subject.]

You think you can show me around? I've only been here two days and I've barely left my room.

It's daunting, at first. [ although if peggy rarely left her room when she first arrived then it was because she'd been recovering from a nasty injury at the time. ] -- Which room is yours?

[ she's not in the habit of giving personal tours. but she remembers what it was like to be new here. ]
