[Souji's been feeling reflective lately, thinking over some things. It's elicited a question that he himself isn't sure he can answer. He wants to find out if others can, so, after some deliberation about whether or not it's a good idea, he takes to the network to ask.]

If you were able to change something in your life at home, what would it be?

[He's not sure he'll even get any answers. It's kind of a personal question. But he's hoping that some people will respond, if only to help him think through things himself.]

[Souji's eyes remain wider than normal, but it's not clear if he's surprised or what. It's more as though something is settling in his mind.

Then he shakes his head a little and his expression smooths out to his normal near-neutral.]

Don't worry. I know things are different for adults. I have the luxury of thinking about things like this because I'm still a kid.

[Kind of.]

Ah, I sounded really dismissive just then, didn't I? It's not like that. Plenty of people worry about this sort of stuff, no matter how old they get. But it doesn't do you any good.

Do you think it's a waste of time?

[Probably, but he still asks.]

[ The whole world is a waste of time, but he's already been too honest for today. ]

Don't you? It's not like you can go back and change the decisions you made, so what does brooding on it do?

[He can't deny that. In their world, at least, the past can't be changed. And really, in the end, things turned out how they should have. Though Adachi doesn't know that yet (and probably wouldn't agree if he did know).]

Not much. I was just reminded of some things recently that I hadn't thought about in a while.

Ah, I can understand that. [ Adachi has a little hunch as to what might have set Souji off, and doubts he would get an answer if he were to ask about it straight out.

He chooses a different tactic. ]

Listen, Souji-kun... I don't know what your regrets are, but I know you're a thoughtful guy. Whatever decisions you made, you must have had your reasons. You did what you thought was best with the information you had at the time.

[ It's easy to make himself sound genuine, when he's not technically lying. ]

You're a good kid. Don't worry so much.

Thanks, Adachi-san.

[He uses the honorific this time, because it has occurred to him that, yes, Adachi is his social superior, at least outwardly, and it might be strange not to verbally acknowledge that.]

I know everything turned out the way it should have in the end, and having done things differently would have changed that.

[ It turned out the way it should have, huh? ]

The right thing to do in any situation can be tricky, and pretty subjective. But if everything ended well, I think you can say you did the right thing.

If "right" is subjective, then from someone else's point of view, things turned out all wrong.

[Guess whose point of view that probably was.]

That's true. [ Very true. ] But we were talking about you.

Yeah...

[He lets out a breath.]

It's just something I'll have to come to terms with.

You can't make everyone happy.

[ At least, not with the world the way it is... ]

But it's nice that you try. Not many people think like that.

I don't think it's that people don't think like that as much as it's natural to worry about yourself and your own problems first.

[Being preoccupied with what's going on in your own life isn't the same as not wanting others to be happy, he thinks.]

Haha! That's surprising, coming from you... but you're right. Most people in this world have only their own interests in mind.

That's not quite what I meant.

[He wonders if he should clarify, but decides not to.]

Well, I guess that kind of thing is the reason we get along.
