[Aramis is in the garden with coffee and a book.]

I've been reading through what will be France's history in most of your times. Did anyone here experience either of what they refer to as the 'World Wars'? The notion of a violent global conflict is...

Unsettling.

Sorry, I'm a bit young to have been there for either one, but I have to ask --

[He doesn't look young enough for D'Artagnan.]

Would you be Aramis or Athos?

Well, yes, and a friend of yours greeted me on my arrival yesterday.

[Technically he'd been around for a few days, but being a teenager makes it not count as far as he's concerned.]

Ianto Jones -- it's a pleasure.

[ Exciting was the word Buckingham would have chosen, but to each their own. To Aramis his loser talk, which the duke finds to be an especially delightful irony, given that the Musketeers have served him his excuse for war on a silver platter. ]

Do you now? Your last approach to foreign politics hides your... unsettledness rather remarkably well.

I was-- [ Buckingham presses the flat of his palm to his chest, blinks in utter bafflement, and probably somehow wills the light in his room to form a halo above his head. ] Has His Majesty's peace proposal offended France? Did... my very visit incite your attack on the Tower?

I...I haven't personally, but my brother read about them recently since he comes from a few years before the second one begins. [Al grimaces.] He made me promise to not read about that one for my own sake, but the first...everything I've read is horrifying.

[ clarisse is much too young to have fought in either, but considering her dad is literally the god of war, she's heard a lot of great war stories — when she actually gets to see her dad, that is. which... isn't often, but she'd rather not think about that. ]

Fun fact: you can blame the gods for World War II. Well, blame their kids, anyway.

[ clarisse. how is that a fun fact. that is not fun at all. but, hey, she's a war kid. she's not really unsettled by it as much as she probably should be. it's just who she is. ]
rues: (i don't care what you think)

[personal profile] rues 2014-08-02 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[ clarisse sighs heavily and rolls her eyes. she's lost track of how many people she's had to explain the gods to. ]

Yes, the gods. Ever heard of Greek mythology? All real. Got your living proof right here. [ say hello to your not-so-friendly neighborhood demigod! ]

It sucks, but it's getting really common now, at least when I'm from. Everyone wants to know everything about everyone and everyone's got nukes and mutants stronger than nukes. I'm surprised we haven't had World War III yet.

My grandpa was in the camps though.

[ Oh boy, here we go. For as blase as Tommy tries to be about most things, genocide isn't exactly a breezy subject. ]

Long story short? The Nazis rounded up all the Jews they could get their hands on and put them in labor camps that really were just elaborate murder camps. Saying that it was bad would be an understatement.
