That was quite the event. Minato was relieved that it was over when it was over. After he got some rest, he had to check on his friends, check on anyone who needed it, and then just find some way to relax. Try to get back to normal.

So he found himself out at the beach, doing something mundane. The ocean was still enough that he could do this: Skipping rocks.

Splish---splish------splash.]

Someone once said that Hell is on your last day alive, you meet the person you could've been.

What's Heaven like then?

[It couldn't have been as simple as not meeting them. There had to be other interpretations.

I'm hoping for something food-based. Not that I can die, but in the unlikely event that it happens, I'd like to be surrounded by food.

That wouldn't be so bad.

[Actually, that'd be kind of amazing.]

But what kind of food?

You'd end up pleasantly surprised if there's a better one? No expectations?

Yeah, typically no one stays dead here. Not that people die often, but it happens sometimes. Especially when the more dangerous events come around, because we get a few of them. But not all of them are bad. Some of them are pretty fun, actually. It seems an even mix, most of the time. For every event that threatens to be terrible, there's just as many that are silly, or happy. People have turned into animals or we all got sent back to high school, things like that.

[ Dying was dying, dignified or not. And that part didn't seem to get easier. Even after happening more than once. ]

[People turning into animals? That didn't seem too bad. Nor was the high school thing since that's something he knows. Dying too, but that's neither here nor there. Sort of.]

How long have you been here, if I can ask?

[Since Minato was so new and that last event was... It had to be one of the pretty terrible ones.]

Oh, and I'm Minato. And you?

[ Simon hums thoughtfully as he does a quick count back in his head. ]

About two and a half years now, give or take. A while. [ He adds this with a wry grin. ]

Oops. I'm Simon. Simon Lauchlan. You still newish around here, Minato?

But even with low expectations, you could still be disappointed.

[Not that he was being harsh or anything.]

It's nice to meet you. I think being here for about two weeks counts as being new.

[But wow, two and a half years is a long time. Some other people have been here for five, and he still had a hard time imagining that. Can anyone be so lucky then? Definition of "lucky" may vary, of course.]

You don't ever get used to this place then, I take it.

It does, you get some leeway. My first two weeks here I was still jumping at shadows and hoarding food, you're coping way better, it seems.

'Used to' is a relative term. No one can predict what event this place will throw at us next, so you never quite adapt to that entirely. But there is a routine, of sorts, that comes from enduring them time after time. And coping with the aftermaths. Finding people you can rely on to have your back helps a lot in this place.

You have to wait at least thirty more years! W-Wait till you're confronted with the m-meaninglessness of life and the reality of your own m-OOOUUUUURR-rtality!

Still, he grins at the offer and nods his head. ] Sure thing. If you ever need to find me, I work at the bar, it's usually the best place to look first. And if I'm not there, someone there can usually point you in the right direction.

No one was supposed to notice.

[That was one way in which they were alike, and they both knew that. No one was supposed to see whatever turmoil they had inside them. However many masks they might wear, none of those things below the surface should be visible through the eye holes.

He kicks his feet lazily, his elbows resting on his thighs.]

[Minato gave Souji's hand a light squeeze.]

It's okay.

[It was because they were alike that it was okay. Minato understood. They were only human. They were only teenagers and hadn't even lived longer than two decades and they had to bear the weight of the world and all of humanity on their shoulders. Couldn't they get a break?

If it were me, don't you think you'd tell me the same thing?

But then it's like you're worrying all the time. Is that okay?

[That couldn't be really healthy. But people had different ways of coping.]

[Drinking age be damned. Not that he's ever really had alcohol, but he was just wondering.]

Hm ... dessert. Pie, cake. Maybe waffles ala mode?
