001 - [Action]
[Beach]
[The soft sloshing of the waves up and down the shoreline is really quite soothing. Therefore, it takes Giles a while before he drifts back into consciousness.
Eventually, however, he realizes that where he fell asleep was a long, long way from the ocean. His mind starts processing information a lot more quickly, after that. He holds out a brief hope that someone in the house just picked up an irritating habit for meditative CDs, until finally he properly processes the fact that he's not in any bed, chair, or table, and he happens to be outside.
At which point, anyone around the boats on the docks might witness a young boy come tumbling out of the boats with a startled gasp. Giles scrambles back to his feet, looking around, eyes wide and body tensed to run at the first sign of threat, or as soon as he has the faintest idea of where to run to.
Eventually, however, especially after a little bit to look around, or talk to some people, Giles settles down fractionally. More than anything he looks...resigned, and a little sad.]
...I suppose it's a good thing I told Angel not to contact her.
[Gardens]
[His exploration of this strange new land is now augmented with a broken tree branch, in case something somewhere decides to try and kill him. The place doesn't look dangerous, but Giles knows all too well that looks can be deceiving.
Fortunately, being a child suddenly has some advantages. One of which is that he's a lot better at climbing than he used to be. Giles uses the apparent peace to not only poke around, but finally get some practice in his new body. He might be spotted climbing on top of hedges to get a look around, or up into trees to take a break and gather his thoughts. Always with the tree branch in hand, though, and he occupies himself stripping off stray twigs or strips of bark. Really, it's almost fun, hopping the gaps between maze walls or pacing the lip of the fountain.
The fruit in the trees or growing in the greenhouse receives some thoughtful consideration, but Giles tries to restrain himself. He's hungry, but eating fruit in strange trees and unknown places tends to do bad things to the mind.
He wants to go home, after all.]
[Hallways]
[By now, Giles probably has a pretty good idea of where he is and what's going on. Even if he doesn't, well...it makes sense to have a home base, of sorts, when trying to come up with any sort of plan. If nothing else, he's not sure he wants to be outside at night.
So Giles can be found pacing the hallways where the bedrooms lie. He's trying to get a sense of which are occupied and which aren't, whether it be peering under the door, listening for signs of life, or occasionally knocking if he's really not sure. He might get side tracked along the way, especially if the door to the local business or the room holding the horse are left open.
Eventually, however, he'll take a room for himself a couple of floors up, and maybe try out the closet. If nothing else, he needs something to take notes with.]

He looks right past Toothless at first, before he realizes that he's just looked right past a dragon and does a double take. The fact that the dragon is looking at him is a fact so alarming that it makes Giles fall back over the other side of the hedge with a yelp.]

He pokes his head around the shrubbery, eyes wide.]

Yep. That's a dragon. Not as big as the one that nearly ravaged Sunnydale, but still a dragon.
Giles looks around for the tree branch he'd grabbed, since this is exactly the sort of situation he'd grabbed it for. The impact had made him let go of it, and also spent it spinning off a few feet in Toothless' direction.
Moving very slowly and carefully, Giles inches towards it. He has absolutely no idea how to deal with dragons. They are a complete blind spot in his knowledge. So he's defaulting to how he'd deal with any large animal - don't show fear, and don't look like prey. He is absolutely afraid, to the point that his hands are shaking, but he's good at hiding that by now.]

Toothless cocks his head to the side, eyes wide and ears forward, trying to look as non-threatening as he can, not otherwise moving. Then he makes a high noise, almost a chittering, in greeting.]

[Giles steps back reflexively as Toothless chatters, bringing his arms up in an instinctive attempt to defend himself. Then his mind catches up, and he relaxes just a bit, taking another searching look at the dragon.
...is that sound a good thing? It certainly didn't sound threatening. It wasn't a roar. The dragon wasn't giving off any recognizable signs of imminent attack.
But maybe this sort of dragon had different indications or body language cues. All the same, Giles knows that he probably shouldn't risk antagonizing it if it isn't doing the same. He lowers his arms, and even leans forward a bit, as curiosity edges out fear.]
Um...hello?

[Toothless isn't sure what the Viking was after, in his crawl, but is relieved to see him looking slightly less on edge. His ears flick back and forth a little as he takes a few cautious steps forward and then stops. There aren't many young Vikings in Wonderland, like Hiccup, and Toothless finds himself interested in them.
He rumbles a bit lower in response to the greeting.]

Giles picks up the branch anyway, just in case something he runs into later isn't as friendly. Then he inches forward a bit more and offers a hand. It works for dogs and horses. Maybe it will work for dragons.
Or maybe he can actually get close enough to touch Toothless. That would be cool, too.]

It's a bit like supple leather, as he gently presses the top of his head against Giles' hand. He's not a particularly shy dragon, anymore. Just firmly aware of the panic that his presence can create.]
no subject
Is.
So.
Cool.
A basic reaction, perhaps, but really the only one that's applicable. Giles genuinely grins as Toothless nudges his head against his hand. He pats the dragon carefully on the snout.]
Sorry about my, um, earlier panic. You're the first dragon I've ever seen up close, and I'm new.
[He doesn't know if Toothless understands him, but it fills the silence. Besides, Toothless seems to be making an attempt to communicate with him, so it seems only appropriate to try and return the favor.]

His wings are furled at his side, covering the harness on him except for the lead that goes down to his artificial fin.]

[Not quite European, not quite Asian. In fact, Toothless puts him in mind of nothing so much as a Komodo Dragon that actually lives up to its name. And yet, there seems to be something almost canine to him...
Since it looked like Toothless nodded, Giles decides to press his luck a bit further.]
Do you live, um... [He gestures at the garden in general.] ...here?
