Video | Open | Everything Is Fine
[The white haired man in the image is both a little out of focus, and more than a little unsure what he's doing. Michael seems bemused, if not outright nervous. He'd been so terribly excited to go to Earth, and this... hasn't been what he expected.]
Yes, hello, is this thing on? Sorry--always wanted to say that. [He chuckles, before moving on.]
Something that goes to-- [And here the camera shifts jarringly to a view of the grounds where he's been wandering, and there’s some rustling, like the owner of the voice might be looking through notes.]--”Phoenix, Arizona.”
[Because that's absolutely a place he can reach from wherever he's wound up, right? Of course it is. The portal was supposed to take him where he needed to go--and where he needed to go was a rather specific place and time on Earth--so it must have. If it were anywhere else, a Place or a Zone for instance, he'd know. All of this is just... a misunderstanding. Clearly.
This is the face of a man who is trying desperately not to consider the possibility that something has gone very, very wrong.]

But really, is it? Oh, there we go. [Nothing changes about the feed, so it's hard to say what he thinks he accomplished.]
I don’t suppose anyone could tell me where I am? If you could just, direct me to a bus. Or a train? Maybe an ‘uber’.Something that goes to-- [And here the camera shifts jarringly to a view of the grounds where he's been wandering, and there’s some rustling, like the owner of the voice might be looking through notes.]--”Phoenix, Arizona.”

[She gestures at the whole of Wonderland.]
So. Unless I'm right and this is actually a test and everyone here including you is some weird Matrix simulation thing like that Chidi I was talking to, we're stuck here until we get sent back to where we were. And if we plan or learn more ethics or do anything of use while we're here, it literally doesn't fucking matter at all!
[Eleanor throws her arms up as if in celebration, grinning a little too broadly with too much of the whites of her eyes showing.]
IIIIIIIII hate it! I hate it and I don't care if you're a simulation because at least you're my simulation and maybe that means I can make you stop wearing the bowties.
no subject
"Whoo! Man," [He claps his hands together for emphasis.] That was... a lot. I'm almost certain I'm not a simulation. [But maybe the rest of this is. Maybe the judge did decide to pull something on all of them. It would explain a lot, even if he doesn't like the thought.]
[A pause.]
Does this mean I can hug you now?
no subject
[She hugs him tight, taking advantage of the height difference to hide her expression. She's...really relieved she's not alone anymore. Possibly all this chattering is just covering for that.
Eventually, she pulls back, sighing.]
Sorry, I didn't mean to overwhelm you or whatever. Just know that whatever your plan was, it might've worked. So don't, like, have another crisis. We've gotta get you settled here, now.
[Eleanor pulls her device out and waves it vaguely.]
How much have people told you about this place? Because there's almost definitely something that got left out, if my own experience is any indication.
no subject
...I'm keeping the bowties. [He just kind of mutters this petulantly.]
[He seems a bit more cheerful when she pulls away, though she's probably not wrong to be worried about a crisis.]
Mostly that it's called Wonderland, and someone's bringing people here, wherever here is, and there's no leaving. I don't think it's a Place, but I'm kind of impressed. And I also don't like it.
no subject
Yeah, it's like. I don't know either this place is based on the story with Alice or the story is based on this place. I might have to read the actual book because I only ever saw the cartoon, and that was on shrooms.
[And it kind of scared the shit out of her, but again, shrooms.]
And yeah. We don't get to pick when we leave. It just sort of happens, I guess. It's already happened since I've been here, and I've only been here like three months. So it's possible! But like. Yeah.
In the meantime, this place has random things happen about every two weeks. People here call them "events". One of the characters from the book will post on the network-- [She gestures with her device again.] --with some cryptic clue, and then some weird thing happens a few days later. One time I was trapped in a room taking a test. Another time I was trapped with a bunch of other people and we had to, like, figure out how to get out by having a personal revelation? Lots of getting trapped in rooms so far. I guess zombies are also pretty common. They're based on memories from the people who got trapped here, like us. I guess that means we might have an event someday based on our memories, which now that you're here is a lot more terrifying, to be honest.
no subject
[He listens to the rest more quietly, seeming a little intrigued to be honest. It's... an interesting setup, and he's back to being a little impressed, even if he doesn't want to be here himself. At least, he's intrigued until the last thing she points out.
Guilt may be one of those emotions he has trouble pinning down, understanding, or remembering the name for, but for a moment it's visible on his face.]
Hey, maybe it only works with humans! [A guy can hope, right?]
no subject
Eleanor sighs, shaking her head.]
Nope. There's skeletons and monsters and like, people who say they're demons in their worlds, and they all get hit by events, and have events come from their memories.
[But there's still more, and she knows Michael well enough to know he might try to weasel his way out of events forever if she lets him sit and think about it for too long.]
There's more, though. There's a like...alternate reality of this world on the other side of the mirrors. And there are people there that are the opposite of us, I guess? Like, our reflections, basically, but more literally because like, mine is probably a Nobel Peace Prize recipient or something. I don't know, I haven't met her. Point is, they can be pretty awful even if they're not little Miss Perfects. They don't usually come over here, I guess, but they could, so. Just be careful, I guess.
no subject
Someone mentioned that. Are they simulations? Other timelines? It sounded like people think they're 'part' of everyone. [The more he's getting over his shock at being here the more he wants to figure this out.]
no subject
To be fair, I was super high when I last watched it but. Yeah. There's definitely something conspiracy-ish going on here, but it's all so...different from the rules you told us. Like, zombies are here. How do zombies fit into any of that Good Place/Bad Place shit?
no subject
They don't. This doesn't. None of this does. Either this is some kind of a test from the Judge or Shawn's finally gotten inventive or this... really does exist in some strand of the multiverse. And it shouldn't.
[He takes a deep breath, rubs a hand across his forehead.]
I'm as old as the universe, and I have no idea what's going on here.
no subject
[Eleanor rubs a hand over her face.]
I was kind of hoping you'd at least recognize some of this? Like. Not really. But there was just enough hope there that this is still disappointing.
[This is why giving a shit about anything is so pointless.
BIG SIGH.]
Well! For now we follow the rules, I guess. Come on, you need a room.
[Eleanor grabs his arm and starts leading him into the mansion.]
no subject
Oh. Right. Yes.
[He still sounds... distracted, but he doesn't object to her leading him inside. At least, until he suddenly stops in his tracks.]
Are any of the others here? Chidi, Tahani, Jason?
no subject
[She can tell he's really upset, and given how that's gone down before, she casts about trying to find something to make things sound less terrible.]
The closets kind of work like Janet do, though? That's...cool.
no subject
[He's doing his best to stay calm, at the very least. One of the humans is alright, and that means things could be worse.]
The closets? [He's not sure if that makes anything less terrible, but he's curious now, which is still a good distraction.]
no subject
[Which means walking to the nearest room with a closet and standing in front of it, all things that are much less convenient than Janet, but whatever. It's something interesting to talk about compared to how they're trapped somewhere and maybe never going to get to the real Good Place.]
So, uh, think of something you want!
[She'll grab the door once he looks like he's got something in mind and open it up for him!]
no subject
He looks at the closet for a moment, before deciding on something.
Considering what he was, he had any number of interesting and unusual options he could have thought of. Considering who he as, he chose none of them.
It appears he'd picked the paperclip collection from his office.]
no subject
God, she's surrounded by nerds.]
Goooood job, buddy. You uh, can do the same thing in the kitchen and dining room too. If you...do you eat? Like, to survive?
no subject
Not to survive, no. But I do like to. I'm starting to see why you guys are always chewing things.
[He's even picked up stress eating as a habit, but he's not going to point that out.]
Do you think it could make me a cup of antimatter? I could really use a pick-me-up after this morning.
no subject
[Not that she's going to ask.]
You wanna go see before we get you a room?
no subject
Yeah, let's do that.
[It's possible he's also trying to put off the idea of living in a room in this place, because that feels like settling for being stuck here, but it's also possible he just really needs the caffeine.]
