✥ video .005

[ Chloe is sitting at her desk with the camera propped up in front of her, and she looks wholly uncomfortable, which is par for the course whenever she addresses the network. She takes a deep breath, speaking with an even tone, clearly having rehearsed what she's about to say quite a few times. ]

Hi, everyone. If you don't know me, my name is Chloe Decker. I've been in Wonderland for almost two years, and before I came here I was a homicide detective with the Los Angeles Police Department. For the last few months I've been running the Deux Lux bar and nightclub, so if you don't know me personally, maybe you've seen me there. That's, uh, not really the point of this, though.

[ She clears her throat and pushes her hair over her shoulder, trying to get back on track. ]

I'm not closing down Lux or anything, but I've come to terms pretty recently with the fact that I'm always going to be a cop. About a year or so ago someone put together a guard to help protect people who had died multiple times in Wonderland. That person has since gone home but I always thought it was a good idea, and even though our relationship with the Mirrorside has seemed to change a little since last year, I think the concept is still applicable. So what I'd like to do is talk about reforming something similar, a group of people who have experience that might be able to offer resources or even protection for those who need it, especially during the more chaotic events.

And even outside of them, when necessary. Some of you are probably aware of an incident that occurred last year involving one of our own being murdered, and I don't think I'm the only one who felt helpless to do anything during that situation. I don't plan on laying down any law here... For the most part, I've learned we take care of each other as best we can. But I do think there is a basic code that needs to be upheld and that is one of decency towards each other, and for me, that means letting the people I care about know that they have somewhere to turn when they need help. I think this idea could help with that, whether it be organizing rescues or safe areas during events, or developing some kind of due process when someone is doing active harm to our community.

[ The part of the script she's more or less memorized is over at that point, so she presses her lips together and nods at the camera. ]

I'm open to suggestions, and volunteers.

I have to say, given some of the things we've seen, I like the idea especially for being there for those that need it during events. We get those that never have been to one war or another, and I know we've both had to be there for others.

How many slip between the cracks and die.

[He pauses, knowing he had let himself forget about this talk until recently with things with Claire.]

Also... Do you know that most of Evelyn's deaths were not because of issues in events like we've dealt with? It was others here.

So you're picturing being able to assign bodyguards to people, something like that?

[Natasha tilts her head, foregoing any small talk or introductions.]

Not a bad idea. It's an easier sell than an actual police force would be. More practical too.

What a narrative you've constructed for yourself.

That's hurtful. I'd come speak with you in person about it, but my availability has been so very limited since I saw you last.

The witch's prison is a marginal improvement from my prior accommodation. You remember the one. If I recall correctly, you left me to die in it.

Listen, I do forget things. I only thought about it recently because of the whole Seth's brain went sideways and I thought I had a loving mom and a fucking life that wasn't crime.

[And all of that is still fucking with his head.]

It came up back when she admitted she'd had all her deaths, and when I gave her shit about being careful, she mentioned it was people not events. Like there had been a serial killer here for a while. Cannibal, apparently. She said he'd never come back.

And she alluded to the fact that maybe none of her deaths were event related.

So yeah, I should have sooner, but the lady who was running the guard knew and she was in charge of all of that so I figured she handled that.

( klaus has never thought any sort of law and order in wonderland would be a bright idea, mostly because he lacked any confidence whatsoever in the people fabricating those laws and tending to their order. in part, also, because it would so inconvenient to be between anyone's crosshairs.

he's not precisely known for heeding human conventions, let alone decency.

chloe leading the face of this, however. that he has faith in, and in her.

it certainly helps that her aim is more realistic than any other he's heard.

klaus is lounging on his couch, one ankle propped on his knee.
) Glad to see you're coming into your own.

No. It wouldn't have the support. [In a number of ways. Whether or not they need one, there's probably room for debate there. But whatever problems Wonderland has, a traditional police force wouldn't be the solution.] Did you picture people coming to you to ask for help, or...?

Fairly. [He focuses on the word he finds the most offensive.]

You think I've been treated fairly here.

( the mikaelsons are complicated, it's true. they've spent the past ten centuries and more being top of the food chain, kings and queens in their own right; vampire and werewolf royalty. klaus doesn't relish the idea of anyone attempting to take him to task for any potential wrongs he may in the future commit, but those don't concern him at the moment. he believes in chloe. he also believes he can sway her to his point of view, if necessary. if not, well.

better to lend his support now than to stand in opposition and breed mistrust.

he doubts — he knows — she wouldn't approve of the tactics he recently took against leopold.

klaus licks his lips, glances at the drink balanced on his leg, as if measuring how much alcohol he will need for this conversation.
) Yes, I've heard of the many incidents that have occurred of late, and certainly have not heard of still many yet, I'm sure.

( he knows all this.

he knows every word, through freya, through claire, through leopold himself, through the plethora of network histories he's taken full liberties to study himself. he saw that pale girl's frantic call for help. he saw the doctor's message, after the fact. he saw freya's too, claiming this was all now under her purview.

he knows, but he's quiet, and he listens. what chloe has to say is more than just facts — and certainly it won't hurt to hear hers, regardless — but it's also how she understood what happened. her point of view. klaus values that, just as much as he values and feels for the obvious shame in her words, in her eyes, in the delicate slope of her jaw as she turns away.

he's silent, for naught but a beat.

his response is short and soft, but there is a weight to it. a finality, a decisiveness.
) Good.

You left me to be chewed-upon. You stood by and watched while they proved themselves to be everything I said they were. You'll leave me as I am, tormented by a witch.

[Because, regardless of the personal crisis she is trying to communicate to him, his thoughts cycle back to his own pain. Truthfully, he doesn't even remember much of the conversation they'd had when he was at his weakest. It doesn't stop him from assuming she'd betrayed him. Everyone here has.]

Makes sense. [Natasha considers that.] Well, it's a little outside my experience, but I wouldn't mind helping out.

Depending on how things come together.
