[She touches her ear lightly, dressed elegantly but confused in her manner. Thank goodness she had stepped foot in this world before, otherwise she would be greatly afraid. Her voice is a thick French accent, but she is speaking English.]

I am afraid that I am far older than I seem. I have spent many years with King Louis XV. I was his maitresse...[though it wasn't a secret to any.]

I was a lady to Her Majesty Queen Marie...I suppose you are the Marquise but we have never met.

[She is puzzling through it, examining her. Then again are there not two Alices?]

[The thing that comes instantly to mind is about sleeping with other people's husbands, but Lia doesn't really have room to talk and it was unkind to begin with.]

I was after your time in her service and not very long in it, myself. But how unusual that we should remember the same places and people and yet do not look familiar to one another.

Sword practice? [Now that horrifies her.] You...use a sword?

In service of His Majesty, yes. I have trained with a blade since I was very young and as it turned out I was more suited to be a Knight than a Lady in Waiting.

[Another oddity. The Pompadour she knows is aware that she has a blade. But how fascinating to get to know this woman all over again.]

A woman should know how to defend herself.

[This does not seem like the world that she knew. Women were encouraged never to sword fight. For a lady to do so, it was frowned upon]

It is not a common thought, perhaps, but I always wanted to learn a sword and so I did.

[As though the fights with her mother didn't happen. As though she hadn't had to fight twice as hard to earn her place.]

Then you are not...a Poet?

Poet? I...write some poetry [Though she senses there is another meaning in what the woman said. She isn't familiar with anything other than simple poetry.]
