[But he smiles regardless, resting a hand against Brennan's arm as he clasps his shoulders, feeling more grounded already now that he's no longer facing this world on his own-- wherever they might be.]
I'm fine, I assure you. And really, Brennan. [He levels him with a look of skepticism, one eyebrow raised in question.] You've been vaulted forward through time an entire year and you balk at the difference of a few days? I expected better.
no subject
[ It's said with a healthy measure of fondness, because riling the mage up was one of Brennan's favorite hobbies. One he could never quite resist poking at for the reactions he'd get.
Dorian's words have his eyes leaving the mage and scanning their surroundings once more instead, taking in the large manor house and the still-clear sky. And everything else that was so utterly foreign and unfamiliar. ]
Yes well. Last time that happened, I was with you and things looked far more terrible than they do now. So I suppose that's a plus. Where have we landed ourselves this time? And who do I have to kill to get us home again?
[ That was sarcasm. Although still probably accurate. ]
no subject
[Seriously, where do these people get off finding fault with him? How dare they.]
I assure you that my presence in both incidents does not count as evidence towards me being even partly responsible-- this time. [Last time... maybe just a little bit.] The residents here call it 'Wonderland.' Silly name, if you ask me. Apparently from some children's book, if any of this is real at all.
[Brennan being here is a strong argument for the fact that it is, however, and that he's not just trapped in some particularly colorful corner of the Fade all by his lonesome.]
I hear there's a Queen. You might take a swing at her.
no subject
[ Dorian's huffy reply just makes Brennan's grin widen a hint in enjoyment of getting him all ruffled once more. Sometimes the extent of which the mage reminded him of a peacock was astonishing. And endlessly entertaining. ]
I didn't think you were at all responsible. I'm pretty sure we both learned our lessons about playing around with time magic last time we had the misfortune of going travelling. And I'd hoped that would be the end of it, too. Ah well. At least we're not surrounded by abominations and red lyrium this time. [ A pause, in which he cuts his gaze sideways at the man once more in a narrowed glance. ] We're not, right?
no subject
[Some form of unrest is incredibly common, although here it seems to be beyond the usual.]
We're-- probably not.
[He can't say for sure, but he hasn't seen any.]
no subject
[ Brennan deadpans as he turns his attention back to the surroundings once more. It's uncommonly quiet, for a country manor, even of such strange design. ]
So what are we surrounded by? And is our presence here this terrible Queen's doing? Or is that part still a mystery.
[ He hated mysteries. He much preferred to leave them to Leliana or Josephine until they'd figured out all the details and then sent him to stab whoever was responsible. Things were much less complicated for everyone that way. ]
no subject
[That, he has to admit, is disconcerting.]
We're surrounded by-- well, the manor's residences. Each of them claims to be from another world; some are content here, some not so much. There are also horses-- and an alarming number of dogs. We might as well be in Ferelden.
[Ew.]
no subject
[ Brennan points this out with faint smirk, because the mage's opinion on the Southern lands has been voiced quite succinctly and frequently in his hearing. Even though he wasn't Ferelden, sometimes his home's borders with the place seemed close enough to count, at least in Dorian's opinions. Then again, the same seemed to go for most Orlesian opinions as well. Free Marchers weren't exactly known to be high society anywhere. ]
Do none of them know why? Or the how?
[ He was guessing not. Dorian was incredibly adept at finding information, especially where magic was involved. If answers were in any way easily accessible, he knows the man would have ferreted them out one way or another. ]
no subject
[It's an important distinction to make, he feels.]
So far, there are no satisfying answers to be found. Sooner or later, everyone I've spoken to has confessed to not knowing more than they actually do know about this place, which is troubling in itself.
[Dorian enjoys mysteries well enough on paper, but so far this one has offered him nothing more than frustration.]
Their closets are magic, apparently.
no subject
Magical closets? For what? Do they automatically clean and repair your clothes for you?
[ Because that would actually be highly useful, in Brennan's opinion. ]
no subject
[Clearly, he's very put out about this.]
Closets. Closets! Magic is for mages, not wardrobes.
no subject
[ Brennan's more interested in the logical part of this conversation, sorry, Dorian. Closets that can give you anything you like sound like the most amazing thing ever invented. He could like a great many things.
A way home being one of them. ]
no subject
[He waves dismissively, irate.]
A book, or cheese, or a pig, apparently, then you need look no further.
no subject
[ Brennan is quite possibly missing Dorian's point here, but he's rather taken with the idea of a magical closet. ]
Do you know how they do it? Is it something we can replicate back home? Maybe they'll let us take one with us. Or we could steal one. Where's Varric and Sera when I need them?
no subject
I hardly think a closet can be liberated from the manor it's built into and retain its magical properties.
[Brennan, please. Do try to focus.]
It's an irresponsible application of magic.
no subject
[ That's got to be possible, right? The manor-house behind them should be proof enough that the ways of whoever inhabits this place is very strange and foreign to everything familiar to him. To them. Brennan might not be as well traveled as some, but he's seen enough of Thedas to know that that style of architecture is like nothing he's seen from Ferelden to the Anderfels. Why is it a stretch to believe their magic might be just as strange? ]
no subject
[It's unheard of-- and he's once again insulted, Brennan, this time by the insinuation that he does not know all the spells, everywhere.]
The whole thing seems just like begging for trouble.
no subject
Why couldn't a mage have enchanted the closets to do what they do?
[ That was a thing, right? His weapons were enchanted to do things they normally wouldn't, and he certainly didn't have the mage responsible following him around every time he needed to use it. His party was often a display of careful skills juggling as it was. ]
no subject
Because, Brennan, they just--
[He cuts himself off with a low snarl of frustration, heaving a sigh as he presses his index and middle fingers to his temple.]
That's just not how it works, dear heart.
no subject
I will take your word for it, Dorian. You'd know better than I, after all.
In the meantime, what can you tell me about this place? Why are we here?
no subject
[Clearly, there's a great deal about Wonderland that has him out of sorts, foul mood settling in and making itself at home, though he does what he can to keep it at bay-- he's not interested in taking things out on Brennan, and his frustration with the situation certainly isn't helping matters.]
No one I've talked to seems to be able to say 'why,' but there are some who've been here for years, trapped within this place as though it were some kind of magical prison-- though I must say, as prisons go, it's well-furnished and provides a great deal more than most.
no subject
So no easy way out then, I'm taking it? Just once, I'd like an easy solution to the madness we keep landing ourselves in. Is that so much to ask? I thought we were mostly done with this chaos.
no subject
No easy way out, no, but we're hardly used to things being easy to begin with.
[Which means that between the two of them, he's sure they can sort something out.]
Perhaps some higher power decided we were dangerously close to growing complacent.
no subject
Perhaps we can just blame Solas and his and be done with it.
[ Someone might still be a little irritated over the abrupt disappearance. And worried. But irritated is easier to admit to. ]
no subject
[He's lost track. Ought to start taking notes again-- though he frowns at the mention of Solas, his brow creasing.]
Well, that would be convenient. Still sore, I take it? [Not that he blames him.] And here I thought he'd been getting on well enough with everyone to stick around-- though he always did seem to have too many secrets for my liking.
