-3° - Should Old Acquaintance Be Forgot

[The feed comes to life and Leonard's sitting in his room, mostly illuminated by candle-light, which does soften the still visible bruises (as a result of this) on his face a little. He's playing with a lighter in one hand, turning it, palming it and flipping it open and shut, but never actually lighting it.

Mostly he looks at the camera, both eye by now able to open fully again.]

Time doesn't really seem to do much in the way of passing here, but things happen anyway. So, guess this is still a worthwhile question.

You got any resolutions?

[Which of course also begs the question whether he has any himself. He looks as if he wants to keep talking at first, but his mouth stays shut and he looks off past the camera, the flame of a candle reflected in his eyes. Finally he cuts off the video.]

[ She's getting a sort of Kurt vibe from Leonard. Maybe not a huge conversationalist? In any case, she totally catches the avoidance but fine, she'll let it go. For now. ]

Actually, I just took one part of my job and adapted it for Wonderland. I'm a physical therapist back home. So if you have any old injuries that bother you on particularly cold or rainy days, come see me. I might be able to help.

[He moves the lighter he's playing with into the other hand and holds his now free hand up, wriggling his fingers a little.]

I froze that hand and shattered it, this one's been regrown. Feels weird sometimes.

[What a unique problem to have.]

[ She doesn't mean to parrot him, it's just, you know. Not what she was expecting. What a far cry from sports injuries. ]

So, is that, like a...super hero...perk? Regeneration?

I'm neither super nor a hero, so I doubt that's in my repertoire.

[He doesn't know how much Ray has told her about anything, given what a great conversationalist he is, but he sees no harm in sharing that much.]

The ship I was on had future tech. So it regrew because they had DNA samples, took a few seconds.

I'm sorry that was an unintentional pun and I'm definitely not making light of the whole situation.

Anyway, uh...I might have some exercises that can help if you ever want to stop by.

[All right, that's cute. He smiles, drawing his fingers into a fist and then pulling his hand back to wrap it around his upper arm instead.]

[He is making light of the whole situation.]

You been here long?

[ She has never been so glad that someone has an easy going sense of humor about being maimed at one point in his life. ]

I've been here about seven months. Maybe eight? It's definitely been less than a year. What about you?

[His humour is about as black as his heart, so there are no worries there.]

Six months, four days. Something like that.

[He keeps a good count, his inner clock has always been ticking.]

Got here after Raymond. He doesn't talk about you much, surprisingly.

[ Well. She doesn't know what to think about that. Is it good? Bad? Just a privacy issue? ]

Well, he can talk about me as much or as little as he wants. I mean, he hadn't really talked much about you, to me, until you punched him in the face.

Right, I only punched him that one time here. [And he has no regrets there. Mostly surprised he has only punched him that one time here.]

Anyway, I prefer getting to know people myself anyway.

Well then, hopefully, you've found out some things about me you've been dying to know.

[ She's joking because she highly doubts he's wanted to know that much about her. ]

I'm working on it. [His smile doesn't really give away how seriously he means that statement, but he's never really one to give too much away.]

We can go on. Favourite colour, food, your star sign... Guess in a place like this, what time you were stripped of parts of your identity and thrust into some alternate universe did you like best?

Also, being a witch at Hogwarts was really not a bad time.

[ She smiles at him winningly. She can roll with this. ]

Nothing to be ashamed of. If I could have anything, it would be the fries from a place called Saints & Sinners back home.

[He's back to playing with the lighter, only turning it in his hand, between two fingers, never actually lighting it. His hands just never really hold still.]

Right, I remember that one. Wasn't the best of times for me, but hard to knock magic. What house were you in?

[ Her eyes can't help but follow the movement as they talk, finding herself wondering if the lighter holds any significance. ]

I was in Hufflepuff. With Ray.

[ She adds that last bit with a smile on her lips, then gestures to the lighter. ]

Is that important to you?

Figures. Good house, right by the kitchen.

[Hey, he might have been Slytherin, but that just means being cunning enough to know the importance of location, location, location.

He looks at the lighter and shrugs.]

My old partner hates me and is a pyro and day after Christmas I find a scratched up lighter in my room. I don't know. You tell me.

[His gift from a future in Wonderland. He turns the lighter in his hand and shrugs.]

Mostly just practising dexterity. You should know all about that.

[ Sarah frowns just a little, feeling bad for him for a second. ]

I think Wonderland thinks it's hilarious.

[ Can a place think anything? She has no idea what Wonderland even is, so what the hell, she'll go with it. ]

Hey, never let it be said that I don't think it's a good idea to be great with your hands.

[ Cheeky. Or at least trying to be. ]

Yeah? Hope Raymond knows that.

[He can be cheeky too. He palms the lighter, pretty much vanishing it in his hand with one quick movement. Magician or pickpocket, take your pick.]

Definitely helped me through life.

[As he leans back and pulls a leg up to rest it across his thigh, he feels the fabric of his shirt between two fingers, focusing on her.]

Ever think about what kind of event Wonderland would come up with, based on where you're from?

He knows.

[ And that's definitely all she's gonna say about that. ]

I have. I honestly don't know how the most traumatic moments of my life could ever be inflicted on everyone. Mass marriages followed by swift divorces?

[ Everyone digging for bodies at their childhood home? She keeps that one to herself. ]

I'm lucky, I guess. My world is, for lack of a better word, normal. No monsters or zombies or vampires or magic. ...That I know of. Key words; I've never experienced any of that, so it might as well not exist for all Wonderland cares. At least in my case.

[ She wonders what horrors Jane and Kurt could inflict, though. The worst criminals that Kurt has ever hunted. Whatever happened to Jane when she was kidnapped at 5. There's no telling. ]

See, that'd be a change of pace for me. I just have long, drawn out break-ups and then Wonderland aligns so I get to relive them, bruises and all.

[Life's just grand.]

Thought my life was normal too, until things were turned up a notch. Didn't really mind, a lot less predictable. But I'm not sure if any part of it would make for a good Wonderland experience.

[What really does anyway?]

Although at least no literal Hell.

I think I speak for everyone where when I say I'm damn glad you aren't from Hell. Or something. No one needs that again.

[ Sarah tilts her head a little, musing over a thought. ]

Although, I guess normal is relative. I mean, take the zombie apocalypse people. That world's their normal and they've figured out a way to live in it, more or less. So the panic comes from us because we can't imagine living in a world like that day in and day out.

Guess so. But then, same logic, you also got a lot of people that live their personal hell day in and day out.

[He tilts his head in kind, consciously or subconsciously mimicking her movement.]

The lesson to be learned that hell can take on many forms.

[ Like finding out your father murdered a five-year-old. That's. yeah.

Sarah goes quiet for a second, letting out a breath before agreeing with him. ]

It can. Or maybe you were in hell all along and you just don't realize it until someone comes along who tells you your life isn't right. Isn't what should be.

That's how it can go. Still can't wrap my head around the concept of a family being happy or wholesome.

[Strange kind of fantasy, but it happens.]

Took me longer than it should have to figure out how wrong my father was.
