-3° - Should Old Acquaintance Be Forgot

[The feed comes to life and Leonard's sitting in his room, mostly illuminated by candle-light, which does soften the still visible bruises (as a result of this) on his face a little. He's playing with a lighter in one hand, turning it, palming it and flipping it open and shut, but never actually lighting it.

Mostly he looks at the camera, both eye by now able to open fully again.]

Time doesn't really seem to do much in the way of passing here, but things happen anyway. So, guess this is still a worthwhile question.

You got any resolutions?

[Which of course also begs the question whether he has any himself. He looks as if he wants to keep talking at first, but his mouth stays shut and he looks off past the camera, the flame of a candle reflected in his eyes. Finally he cuts off the video.]

I will. I told him other things about his future before you two came over. Giving it a break for now.

[He's also not sure how to tell him. How to tell your partner of thirty years that you didn't make it? Especially when they are as they are right now. When Mick might see it as him trying to be manipulative and because it really doesn't justify a thing.

But most of all, how could he tell someone that's always been there for him that he won't be around any more?]

We were working through it, up until the end. We'll work through it again. There's no quick fix. He has the right to be mad at me. Telling him now would be interferring with that.

[If everything is as heavy as that, which it might be, Riley doesn't necessarily blame him for that. ]

It's just going to take time. How long are you going to go before you tell him? When he's not mad anymore? When he's less mad?

He's just gonna get more mad if you keep not telling him.

[Maya knows she would. And Mick seems to be better at holding grudges.]

He's not mad now, not really.

[Hurt, that's a different matter. Sad.

Lonely. Leonard's more in tune with Mick's feelings than his own.]

It's not something I want to share when he's likely to think I'm lying.

[She frowns.]

How long do you think it will be until he thinks you're not lying? Would he think you're... just... joking about that kind of thing? That's not the kind of thing you lie or joke about.

Should we go with you? He won't hit you again in front of us, right?

[He seems to be soft when it comes to younger people.]

No. Ain't how we do things.

[They barely do feelings, especially Leonard, they definitely don't do them in front of anyone.]

I'd just like to hit pause on breaking his heart for at least a few days.

If you want us there, though... For support, or something...

[They can do it. But also maybe they just need to find whatever their bay window is going to be and work it out.]

[She picks up where Riley trails off.]

-- because Riley and I are part of that "we" now. What happens to you matters to us. We're a family. Mick too. And we don't just leave people alone.

Oh hell. [It's just muttered, because what else can he honestly expect of these children? He thinks of a look he'd have shared with Mick right now and ends up turning his head to the side, watching the candles that are still burning.]

I'll work up to it. He has other things to digest right now.

Okay.

[She's willing to let it slide a little this time, because it's clear that he's going to talk about it with Mick when it's time, which is hopefully soon, because friendship is important and being there for your friends is important.]

But we're always here if you need us for anything.

Okay? We're okay with this??

[She pinches the skin on Riley's arm, though she doesn't challenge Len any further.]

I don't care what you're okay with. I'm not confronting my partner with this just so you can have everything tied up in a neat little episode.

[Some things can wait a while.]

I'm not going to use this to make him forgive me faster.

Ow—Maya! It's—it's not like we're not going to be there for them, but they aren't us.

And I think it'll work out. [She frowns.] It's just not gonna be right away. I don't think this is the kind of thing that's gonna fix itself with some talks.

[Since one of the topics that came up in this entire conversation was. Well. Death. Not to mention the other details she doesn't really know much about.]

But you could.

[She huffs.]

But if Riley can trust you to handle it, then I guess I can too.

Him forgiving me is something that can happen. It will.

[He knows that much, he's been there.]

There's no end to death. Ain't in any rush to let him know we're over.

You're not over. You're both here. As long as you're both here, you can't be over.

[And while Wonderland is Wonderland, that still doesn't change that simple fact.]

[She lets Riley's words hang there for a moment, because they're from Riley and they're important.

But then, she can't help but ask about something that's been on her mind since he turned the tables on their discussion altogether.]

What's it like to die?

Inconvenient.

[True enough, even if the one word answer is mostly motivated by that not being something he actually wants to talk about.]

I'll save the gory details for another day if that's all right with you.

[Riley's not sure she wants to know the gory details anyway.]

Is there anything you need?

[There are gory details? Like horror movie gory? She's even more curious now.]

Yeah, I mean... We came here to help in the first place.

You've been very helpful.

Maybe you can find someone else to help, now that you're done with me.

[This did not go as planned by a long shot. Why do things not work like they do in sitcoms.

She's going to start pulling Maya towards the door, though. She can tell that he'd rather just have them be done now. And she's pointedly leaving the first aid kit there.]

If you need to find us for anything, you know where we are, right?

[They were supposed to have a wacky adventure and probably go back to their rooms wet or messy or both somehow.]

He won't ask.

But I know where you are. That's something.

[This really isn't how Leonard planned it either. Things don't usually get away from him like this.]

Look. We'll talk later. I want you safe. Do what you want, but don't do it to spite me.
