01 ☂ Video
[For someone from a place of slightly more primitive technology, Lup seems to get a handle on her handheld device quickly enough, the elf framing her face perfectly in the screen, mouth curled to the side in a sharp grin. She looks totally in her element, confident and poised despite knowing nothing of this place or of the people who run it.
The one thing she does know is she needs out of here. Pronto.
For those unfortunate residents of Wonderland who know Taako, they may mistake this woman for him considering they share the same identical faces and long, elven ears. Her voice is a little different, naturally, but hey, elves get sick sometimes too, right?]
Now, I don't want to crush your game, but I'm gonna need the name of the nerd who runs this place, because I'm a busy woman who has exactly zero time for this bullshit. I can't fault you for wanting some of the good, ol' Lup brand to sparkle up this place, but it just isn't going to work.
It's not me, it's deffo all you.
And hey-- [She holds up free hand in front of the camera, which certainly looks to be on fire.] If you don't want to come out and face me yourself, I'll just start burning it down. I have a feeling that garden out front is gonna make for a pretty choice blaze. And I've got spell slots to burn, baby.
Your move. [And okay, that ending is slightly marred by the fact she struggles to figure out how to disconnect the call, but still!]

im so......... punctual
He scratches his head, looking away. He thinks, idly, that he's glad he doesn't have to learn how to make conversations "private", because most of his words will descend into static for people other than Lup anyway.]
Um, uh... Ooh, boy, that's quite a story. I guess the short of it is that they've had their memories of you erased by the Director. You and their entire journey escaping the creature known as the Hunger.
[Ahem. He was only told this story once, but he has an excellent memory for mysteries. And this was one of the largest mysteries of his life: the mystery behind the Bureau of Balance.]
She, um, when you and the... the Institute of Planar Research and Exploration, when you all created the Grand Relics and unleashed them on my world, she regretted it. She never wanted them to be made. So... She erased everyone's memories of the them, of the mission, and set about trying to collect them herself, but you had already...
[Ahem.]
You were gone, so... they couldn't be allowed to remember you, I suppose. I'm sorry, ma'am.

The Director? [Lup repeats with a twist at her mouth, her tone still aggressive, but the confusion there softens it considerably. Who was the Director? Someone she had yet to meet? Someone with the power to erase memories--
Oh. Oh, gods.
Angus continues to describe this mysterious person--'when you all created the Grand Relics', she regretted it', 'she never wanted them made'--and the connection, as impossible as it feels, connects.
Lup has a visible reaction in front of the camera of her handheld device, the woman shuddering helplessly, eyes quickly squeezing shut as if to block out the truth that Angus was laying down for her. She's going to be sick.
Lucretia. Angus had to have meant her. The only member of their group to stand up against Barry and Lup's plan to create the relics, her disappointed expression still so vivid a memory in Lup's mind. No, Lucretia would never have taken it that far. They were friends, they were family. Even if she'd been so obviously upset over her plan getting vetoed, the other woman never would have forcefully put it into action against the six of them. Taking their memories, the very thing that kept them bound to each other now that the mission was over. Lucretia cared about them, knew how important Taako was to Lup, she couldn't have just erased her from him--
But here Lup was. Stuck in this hell with a brother who has zero idea who she was. Try as she might to fight it, maybe it was truer than she could believe.]
How? [and her voice is strained, that earlier anger replaced with something so much more upsetting.] How do you know all of this? Taako doesn't even know my name, so how do you know this?

He can't look up again, can't meet her eyes, as he answers.]
They were... They were just regaining their memories. The Director had to explain everything, so the weight of remembering a hundred years at once wouldn't destroy them. I didn't have memories to regain, but... I was there, when she helped them start to remember. It was the last thing I saw before I arrived here.
[He fidgets with his fingers, adjusts his glasses, anything that can put off the next revelation. But then, the pause between thoughts becomes unbearable, and he has to complete the explanation.]
Wonderland, um, can bring people into this world at any point in time. The last thing I remember, it was a few hours after the sirs had returned from their last mission to retrieve a Relic. They had already started to uncover the Director's secret, with the help of a lich named Mr. Barry Bluejeans.
But for Mr. Taako and Mr. Magnus, when they arrived here... They had yet to experience all that. They were still in the middle of their last mission to retrieve the Animus Bell. They even thought this Wonderland was the same as the one they were in before they arrived. Um, this Wonderland, it... can be very tricky, that way.
[He folds his arms uncomfortably, still unable to meet her eyes through the screen.]
I'm sorry, ma'am. They can't remember you even if you explain it to them. That's the way the Voidfish works.

Because once she knows what she's dealing with, Lup can fix it. She may not know how to right now and it may take some serious time to figure out how, but she'll find a way. If anyone was worth the effort, it was her family. And there was just no way in hell she was going to let her family forget about her, no matter how badly Lucretia's betrayal stung.
Angus continues, polite and considerate, trying to be so gentle when Lup just wants the facts thrown right at her face, but his pace gives her a chance to plop to the ground in the mansion entranceway, crossing her legs and pushing her back against the wall. She's not sure she's ready to leave this space yet. Others have advised her to take a room, make it her own, to start settling in for a long stay. But it's just too soon. She needs more information first before she lets herself settle even the slightest bit.
And maybe it's just the fact he holds her heart, but there's some definite relief flooding through Lup's frame at the mention of Barry helping their friends. Knowing her love is there, safe and on the case, eases some of the tightness in her chest. As a lich, he'd be immune to Fisher's magic, so he must remember her, he must be looking for her. Of course, that just opens up a whole new line of questioning that Lup refuses to entertain at this moment.
Where the hell was she in this timeline?
Finally, Angus puts it all out in front of her and Lup lets herself breathe.]
Well, that fucking sucks, kid. [Truer words have never been spoken.] But you know who I am, so I guess this means I get to enlist you to help me out with this, don't I? [Sorry, Angus. You are going to get wrapped up nice and tight into this mess. No buts about it.]

I-- I mean, of course, ma'am! Yes! I mean, but, what are you going to do?? The Voidfish, it, it erased you from their minds. It left no trace of you. So, so it's not just that they... don't remember. They can't, ma'am.
[He hates spelling it out like this, making it sound so devastatingly simple, but... that's what it is, right? It's impossible.
It's the cruelty of the world Ms. Georgia tried to explain to him. The truth can be awful. And even the Madam Director, the woman that... gave him a home, even she isn't a good guy. Even she betrayed the sirs', betrayed Lup's trust.
Thinking about that, though, brings clear distress to his face, so he tries to push it out of his mind. He's been trying to push it out of his mind since Taako arrived and reminded him of everything that was happening at home before he left, even with the elf's complete ignorance to it all. It's quickly proving to him that he can't do that forever, and soon enough someone is going to come from home and bring consequences with them.
If Lup's arrival hasn't already done that.]

If you really know anything about our story, kid, you'd know that impossibilities don't exist.
[It doesn't matter if the Voidfish erased her existence or that there's no possible way to reverse that effect without said Voidfish around. Lup's already made up her mind and the rest of the world can burn under the weight of her new truth. She may not have a clue how, but she's going to get her brother and her friend to remember her. Then they'll all get out of this damn place.
While Angus anguishes over the heavy weight of cruelty of the world, Lup looks lighter than she had been, her mind made up with a clear, definite goal to follow. How to follow that goal exactly is a bit of a mystery, but she's determined to figure it out. Still, she catches that glimmer of distress on the boy's youthful face and shoots Angus an encouraging grin back.]
Chin up, kid. We've got our work cut out for us.

[How they traveled for a hundred years without age affecting them, how they escaped the Hunger so many times... That's not something he's aware of. Perhaps Lup, if she's feeling generous, could explain more of the story. But what matters more than learning what happened is learning how to fix it.
When Lup catches him looking upset, he flushes and clears his throat. Time to brainstorm.]
Y-Yes, ma'am. Perhaps we could take advantage of the fact that the Voidfish's abilities don't work on the dead? Oh, wait, we shouldn't kill them, that wouldn't be any good at all... Especially here. Darn it.
[Think, think, think...]
Um! Um, we could trade for a Voidfish from the vendors! Only... it would have to be the very same Voidfish, the baby one. That's the one that ate your story. I don't know if they would be able to get, you know, the same one.
no subject
And maybe having someone who knows the full extent of their long journey will help to make the woman feel less alone in this place. Just a little.
Angus leaps into brainstorming, and even if his ideas aren't a hundred percent perfect, it leaves Lup's expression looking more lively, eyes sparkling in amusement. Kid goes straight into killing her brother and friend. Yeah, she likes him.] Okay so, probs not the way to go, but I like where you're at! Even if we have to get our hands on the specific fish, couldn't hurt to try.
What kinda crap do these vendors want in exchange for something like that? Isn't everything in this place free?
no subject
And then, of course, she asks about the vendors. He really doesn't know about going this route, especially when he's unsure if they can provide the specific Voidfish they need, considering he doesn't know much information about the vendors. But he does know the basics, at least...]
I believe they trade... well, usually, what they want is memories. And I don't know for sure whether they wouldn't be able to give us the specific fish or whether they would, ma'am, but I do know that's a lot to ask for on a maybe.
no subject
Okay, so scratch that off the list. [Like, with permanent ink. Just scribble that shit off of there.] My memories aren't going anywhere.
[As long as she has a say in it, at least.]
Let me get my feet wet here first. I'll read through some of these Wonderland guides and start chatting people up. Then we can meet and come up with a game plan. Something has to work. It's just a matter of wading through the bullshit to find it.
