So, getting drunk for multiple days after you die. Par for the course, or just me?

It's been twenty seven years. [Maggie's whole lifetime. She has no memories of a world without the reality of the walking dead.] The Rising was a worldwide disaster, but some parts of the world righted themselves much more quickly than others.

My parents made their fortune by shifting every penny they had into medical technology just before the stock market froze. Their theory was that either money would become meaningless in a full economic breakdown, or people would care more about their health if society managed to right itself.

It spread fast, before people were entirely certain what was happening. Mainstream news outlets didn't help by trying to sweep things under the rug. The period from 2014 to 2018 is referred to as the Rising, but it was everywhere long before the end of that time. And when I say everywhere, I don't just mean a few scattered reanimated corpses in each town. Every mammal on earth is infected. Any mammal over forty pounds will get back up after dying, or turn if exposed to the virus in its amplified state, rather than the dormant version all of us have.

As for how fast they move, it depends how long ago they died. They slow down as their bodies deteriorate.

We figure it out to an extent. There's a very prevalent culture of fear. People are afraid all the time, isolation is the norm, and most people shy away from touching anyone besides their nearest and dearest.

People are becoming more afraid rather than less. I'm also a journalist, and the CDC is quite literally killing to bury stories, on a large scale.

If time fixes things, twenty seven years isn't enough.
