[Voice]
This is really impressive.
[The threat of questions about Alex/Tim/Jay stuff hangs in the air, but Max's curiosity has spiked enough that she can ignore it. With all the changes that have recently happened to Wonderland, she needs to be prepared.]
It must have taken forever.
no subject
[There's almost a laugh behind it, low and self-deprecating.]
It took...a while. Kinda pisses me off the Network's not easier to get through.
[Finally, what she said really sets in, beyond the fact that she doesn't remember anything. She should've been taking notes, she says. Yeah, maybe, but she didn't, and it's not like they can go back and fix it.]
No--no! [It's supposed to be reassuring, but when it comes out of nowhere like this, it's more startling than anything else.] I mean, it's not like you had to. This place'd probably eat whatever notes you took, anyway. Doesn't seem to like us having a record.
no subject
Doesn't seem to like us, period.
[There's a dryness to her voice, again a lack of real conviction.]
Jay, do you, uh... Do you just record stuff or do you actually like... have an opinion about it?
[She remembers him pointing that camera at her. Maybe he's more interested in recording than anything else... But she's curious about what he thinks of their whole situation.]
no subject
Does it matter?
[She's not gonna be satisfied with that. Nobody's satisfied with that. It's not even really an answer.]
[Does he have an answer?]
I mean, I'm... [Another extended pause.] I'm trying to help.
no subject
Help, like... You think Wonderland's bad and you're trying to help us bust out?
no subject
[Wonderland's bad, but he's seen worse.]
It's just better to know, y'know?
no subject
...Yeah. But say you had a choice... Would you want to go home?
[There's a lot of hidden questions underneath the fairly innocent one. Are things worse in Alex's (and Tim's) world than here? Is the mystery here so much more intriguing? "Does it matter?", too, she supposes.]
no subject
[He's thought about it. Of course he's thought about it; he's been thinking about it almost non-stop since he arrived, between locking and relocking his door and worrying Tim's trying to slip pills under his tongue while he sleeps and then worrying the pills might run out and trying to determine what Tim's angle is and trying to piece together what Alex's angle was and trying to figure out how much he can say and if saying anything is dangerous and if saying nothing is more dangerous and if the Queen of Hearts is lying and if the Red Queen is lying and if the White Queen is lying and if Alice is lying and if any of them are who they claim to be or who they used to be or who they were yesterday and playing back the footage and playing back the footage and playing back the]
[Would you want to go home?]
[Yes. He wants to go home.]
[Of course he doesn't. He can only remember fragments, but there must be a reason he never went back. He just has to trust his past self on this one. He wouldn't have been living in a bare-walled apartment by himself for no reason. They never called, not once that he can remember. There must be a reason.]
[But going home isn't even an option, is it? (Is it?) If he's leaving, he's not going home. He's going back to the bloodstained carpet-over-cold-concrete, he's going back to the scratching of withered branches across the window, he's going back to the orange split through with crackling bands of yellow, back to chromatic aberration, back to skipped frames and thoughts that run until they halt, wind it back, play, to the sensation that he should move but nothing responds, to eyes glazed open, fixed on a point on the wall that wasn't there a moment before.]
[That's where he's going. Back where it takes you.]
[Back where, more likely than not, it took Alex Kralie.]
I don't...
[His voice wavers, and he throttles it down into silence until he can pull himself together.]
[One, two, three, four, five.]
No, I--
[One, two, three, four.]
No.
no subject
Poor Jay sure has some issues, huh?
She ignores the little voice in her head. Though she has to agree, deep down. Such a simple question, common for residents of Wonderland to ask one another, and he struggled so much to answer.
She shouldn't push this. She really shouldn't.]
...Jay are you okay? [A pause.] Really?
no subject
Yeah. 'M fine.
[He knows she's not gonna accept that. He barely knows her, but she knew Alex, and she knows Tim, so...yeah, she's not buying it. He'll have to explain.]
I mean, it's between events. There's a place to sleep. There's food. There's the...the closets.
[All the essentials, fully covered: food, water, shelter, a full bottle of pills, nobody breaking into his hotel room, no faceless silhouette leering at him through the window. He's doing fine. He's doing a hell of a lot better than he was back home. He's doing a hell of a lot better than he'll be if this place sends him back.]
Are...you?
[He told Tim he wouldn't talk to her about it, and if it'll keep her safe, he honestly doesn't want to. But if she's not safe, he wants to know.]
[Voice -> Private Voice]
Well, she thinks to herself in a drawl. You're no psychologist, Max Caulfield. So stop trying.]
I'm... fine. [Here she could mention the arcade in the youth center. The music room. The lake. Cover up all the dissatisfaction and restlessness with the physical benefits of Wonderland, just like Jay...
She rolls her eyes to herself and switches them to a private channel.]
...I really don't wanna ambush you about this, but I'm assuming we're on the same page about the... The capital-T Thing, right...?
no subject
[He's silent on his end of the line.]
[Finally, he double-checks that the line is private, double-checks that his camera's picking up the audio, before mumbling a response:]
Tim told me you...you've seen it. 'Cause of Alex, and...and I guess, 'cause of him.
[His voice trails off as Jay attempts to tap a message out to Tim. He promised he'd tell, if Max got curious. He promised he wouldn't go pestering Max about it, but that if Max ever asked him, he'd let Tim know.]
[They've got an agreement now, and the cost of breaking it isn't something Jay wants to think about.]
[He hopes he's typing quietly enough that she can't hear.]
