[Far below Wonderland's rolling hills and questionable forests lies a complex, cavernous maze that put the one in the gardens to shame - a veritable labyrinth of natural passages and crevices, pools and underwater tunnels. A subterranean system that has yet to be properly explored and documented.

Behold, then, Wonderland's very own intrepid explorer and ~~wannabe~~ archaeologist!

Evelyn has set up something of an encampment site a little ways from the basement steps into the caves. A steady drip...drip...drip in the background accompanies the brushing sounds of her tools on stone, and she very excitedly picks up some of her samples before taking them back to a lantern-lit table. She switches on her communicator.]

I've discovered something really quite remarkable, it- the geological strata here is a complex amalgamation of impossible stones and rock formations, many of which should be separated geographically by thousands of miles, much like the plants above ground, but here...here there are veins of pyrope garnet right next to limestone stalagmites, enormous calcium deposits, and chalk beds, of all things!

[Physically impossible, by all accounts. Next thing you know there will be dwarves mining for precious gems down here.]

I'm not certain if anyone else has made findings regarding the cave system, but if you have, please let me know; I'd very much like to share notes.

Ooh, liked both those places. Didn't get long in London, but I had an extended layover in Egypt — for a couple days. Were you there on vacation, or runnin' 'round caves there, too?

[Toothless rumbles an affirmative, approaching her slowly. He doesn't want to alarm the female Viking, but he's very curious about the little camp she seems to have set up down here.]

[Oh, well then, maybe they'll have something in common, then. Granted, Chell isn't entirely comfortable around large underground spaces anymore, but if it's a way out...]

[Hm, potential way out of Wonderland + [small spaces + sudden drops], this could be up Chell's alley.

So, she nods, and she shuts off the feed.]

[Aaaaand shows up to the cave a little later. Not to help anybody, mind you, just for her own curiosity. Don't mind her, she's just looking around.]

A few times. I got homesick.

[ Ha. Ha. Hanyway. Philip slowly breathes out while looking at her findings and the makeshift workplace that goes with them. ]

You're taking notes, right? We could cross-check later, see if we can get all that from the closets. There might be more to it if we can't, if nothing else it means we've got a source for Precambrian fossils if we ever run out, but--

[ Another look, though not exactly a focused one. His thoughts are trailing off elsewhere... ]

Makes you wonder if it's always been part of the design, or if it's another thing feeding off of our memories...

[ But then, what sort of resident would have been around during the time of those fossils? ]

[He huffs out half a laugh, mostly lacking in humor, and shakes his head.]

Yeah, no, trust me. I get that.

[His own little trip to the future had been horrifying. There are just some things you can't un-know. If it's something he can't change, yeah, you can bet your ass he's a hell of a lot happier not knowing.

He sighs.]

Look, about before- I'm sorry, alright? For taking off. I just don't really do...

[People. Touchy-feely conversations. Sudden shocking realizations that he has a new brotherly obligation.]

[Evie leans across the table to retrieve her notebook, already having taken about ten pages worth of observations. On the very last one there's a rough sketch of the main cave chamber itself, with meticulously-taken measurements of its dimensions and several estimations of height.]

I've got down everything I've found so far, but I'm not a professional geologist - a lot of these things...I don't even know what they are.

[She emphasises her point by opening a small boxes of little black stones, crisscrossed in shape.]

I'm not certain if there's anything living in these caves, either. Evidence suggests that there could be bats - or there were bats - I've found coprolites, and some of the pools of water have little...they look like fish, but they've got white eyes. I think they're blind.

Civilised conversations?

[Evelyn suggests, lofting an eyebrow. Her tone suggests that she's teasing, at the very worst.]

Dean, I know you're not very good at making friends. It isn't as though you help yourself, you know.

[And there's absolutely no way he can argue with that. Which isn't to say that he doesn't have his reasons - everyone does - but this isn't the sort of place where you can just push people away and hope for the best. He's stuck, whether he likes it or not, and may very well have to start laying down roots.

Again.]

[It doesn't look harmless, but it certainly has the largest, most expressive eyes she's ever seen on a live animal. And it's actually acknowledging her.

Setting her tools aside she holds a hand out, palm up, the way you would when allowing a cat or dog to get used to your scent.]

I've got...um. Some biscuits and I think cured herrings, if you'd like any?

[ Philip takes one of the stones and turns it in his hand, but he's not familiar with the design either. Bats on the other hand... ]

Saw some the last time I was down here, closer to the other exit. [ He looks at her, not sure if she's aware. ] The caves lead outside-- they're supposed to lead outside, it's got to be the same system, I've come in here and the other way, but I never managed to make it all the way through from either side.

[ Which is why he takes a particularly interested look at the sketch he envisions to be the beginning of a map. ]

Come to think of it, I don't know anybody who's been here a lot, not enough to--

[ ...say for certain that there might not be an exit hidden somewhere in the darkness. But that's too much optimism for one day. ]

You sent a transmission, right? Any interesting replies?

[In order to find out whether or not the caves actually meet (and where), Evie would be more than willing to mount a full-scale expedition with multiple people - the real question is, would anyone else actually want to come along? And what happens if you're down in the caves during events? Do they change too?]

I did, yes. And I've gotten...

[Evie half-grimaces to ease Philip into her response.]

...a couple of parties who are strictly interested in the fact that I'm a woman alone in a dark cave, and others who would like to help. It doesn't appear that there's anyone who knows them well, though.

[She lists the rest on her fingers.]

There were also some confused callers who didn't know the caves existed at all, ah- and a dragon.

[That looks promising, so the Night Fury approaches her further and sniffs her hand. He shakes his head a little, though, at her offer of food. Cured herrings sounds like the smoked eel that he and Hiccup abhor.]

[BUT OF COURSE, WITH BELLS ON.]

I'll be sure not to put my weight on it.
I'll see you soon.

[And some time later he'll turn up. She'll hear him before she sees him, echoing footsteps in the dark passageways.]

[Evelyn laughs at that.]

I believe I was just having this conversation with your Gascon the other day,

[D'Artagnan had still been trying to figure out the kitchen.]

Kushari, I think. It's a traditional Egyptian dish - not meat-heavy, mostly grains.

I'll do my best.

[It shook its head. It shook its head.]

...can you...understand me?

[Obviously it does a little, but the extent to which it comprehends human speech patterns must have a limit somewhere.]

I'd certainly like to try some, I'm rather fond of puzzles.

[Aramis gives her an amused look when she mentions having discussed the issue with D'Artagnan.]

Is that so? Then you know something about him that I don't.

I've never tried food from Egypt. I'd be willing.

I'll find a couple good ones and bring them to you. I don't think you'll need my help once you figure out the controls, though.

[He gives her his most line-iest line face. Civilised conversation. No, as a matter of fact, he doesn't usually do those either, but he's guessing she's kidding so he's not going to grace that with a retort.]

I help myself just fine, thanks.

[Helps himself keep people at a polite distance away and doesn't form close bonds. Judge him all you want, but it's the only way to stay sane in a life like his.

So, yeah, okay, she's probably right, but he's also stubborn.]

Look, what do you want me to do, huh? Get all cozy with you guys again and start all over from scratch? What happens when we get outta here, or someone dies, or I get a rock to the head and forget about you all over again? You really wanna keep going through this?

[Toothless nods, as if this is the most simple thing in the world.]

You act as though I've yet to see anything terrible while I've been here.

[Even in her own world, she's dealt with curses and really grumpy fellows coming back to life. Surely Dean can empathise. Here, she's already lost a life - not from anything tame, mind you, but because James Moriarty wanted to leave a few presents for Sherlock Holmes, and slit her throat in the library.

There have been Shadows, the Jabberwocky, ghosts and demons, sentient viruses, the living dead. The worst monsters of all are still people.]

I don't know, Dean. But is it really worth it to constantly push everyone away? Whatever you were doing before you got here, it's not happening anymore. Time has stopped. And you may only be here for a couple of weeks, a month - but you might be here for a year. We've all lost people. It happens.

[For Heaven's sake, you could start a case study on the long-term psychological effects that has on people in Wonderland.]

So don't you for one second think that you're going to be the big damn hero by saving everyone the effort of getting to know you again.

[Because that has to be the most selfish thing she's ever heard.]

You must travel a great deal,

[But then, if he's from the future, it's much easier to travel. Plane travel still isn't entirely commonplace for her - they take a ship from England to Egypt.]

I was actually doing research in Egypt, working in the museum of antiquities.

[It hasn't been until recently that he'd bothered to leave Gotham at all, but he'll refrain from mentioning as much.]

Sounds really neat. Bet that's a job that's always interestin'. Find anything worth researchin' here other'n the mish-mashed caves?

[ Philip contributes his own half of the grimace, but the revelation doesn't exactly come as any sort of great surprise or shock. Add a raised eyebrow for the dragon and the final verdict, which is a rather plain: ]

Did you bring your bat?

[Oh, come on, it isn't as though she's some great magnet for trouble.

...Much.

Evie gives him a very put-upon expression.]

I've got a small rock-hammer in my equipment kit, if it makes you feel any better. You didn't come all this way to play bodyguard, did you?
