[Shortly after the Red Queen's little message, Jane finally gets around to using her little network device, having been distracted by the library. She will always find the library, no matter where she ends up.]

Okay, so um, is that sort of thing normal? Well, being warned for things? [Jane fidgets a little on screen, then smacks her head with her palm]

Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to even mention my name, I'm Jane Foster, and I somehow or the other ended up here. So, um, hi?

So that is fairly common, then. Okay, I can deal. Good to know that they decided to change their methods. Can I ask how long you've bee here?

Um. Gimme a minute to think about that. ::He pauses for a moment.:: That means I've been here too long, doesn't it? Dammit.

::He mentally counts back to when he arrived.:: I think about three and a half months.

So that's bad if you can't even remember how long you've been here. Noted. So time really is relative here, or else time doesn't work as it should, leaving me to think that they're using a set of physics rules that aren't usual.

The whole thing where we don't age, doesn't help. Met someone that said he's been here for two years and he's the same physical age that he was when he arrived. And he's a teenager. Kinda gonna notice something like that in our age range.

[Chell, as always, is helpful:]

Could we unpack that a little, please? I get the idea that is is a very weird place, but a single word that confirms my question really isn't helping.

[Fine.]

It's an event. The mansion changes for a few days. It happens every few weeks.

So there is a pattern. A regular enough one, then to be every few weeks. [have a brilliant smile, Chell] And this is the first time that the warning has actually made sense?

[... Oh boy, she'd get along well with the other people trying to unravel the event patterns, that's for sure.

Chell nods. And, because she's going to be asked to elaborate:]

Aye, so far as in me own experience. Except last time she were more than willing to make excuses for her own mistakes than be helpful.

So she's made a broadcast before. What were her mistakes she was apologizing for?

Being terrible at chess.

I'd say folks tend to get a wee bit cranky when ye use them as the pieces for your bloodbath.

A literal bloodbath? With people as the chess pieces? Oh, my god. What is this place?

Wonderland.

Wonderful. I've read the books.

Aye? You be the second one to mention these books.

Oh? And who is the first one?

Can't recall her name. [Which is a lie, but it's just none of your business. Sorry, Jane.] But she, too, mentioned a book about a place called Wonderland. Something about through a rabbit hole, or some nonsense.

We always get a warning, but they usually aren't as helpful as this one was. It's usually a riddle no one can figure out.

[He takes a breath and shrugs.]

My name's Souji. I've been here awhile, so if there's anything I can explain, I'll do my best.

[omg somebody with sense, brb perking]

So a riddle. Those are always fun to figure out. Hello, Souji, it is a pleasure meeting you. [she smiles] I have so many questions and nothing makes sense.

[He smiles back.]

I don't know if my answers will help. Some of them will probably be "no one knows".

Any answer will be good, even the admiting of lack of knowledge. Then we know where to go to fill in the gaps.

[He nods.]

What questions do you have? I'll do my best to answer.

[This is new: someone from her world. She knows of Dr. Foster; she's read Coulson's reports about New Mexico, and she followed up more after her encounters with Thor and Loki.]

Dr. Foster? You've arrived in Wonderland. I can help with any more questions if you have them.

[PERK. someone knows her, oh happy day]

So this is Wonderland. I was hoping it was just a really bad dream. So. Are you SHIELD? Because I know most of the faculty at Culver and you're definitely not a familiar face.

Warning is arguable; a whisper on the wind is a spare one indeed.

[Loki tilts his head slightly to one side, raising his eyebrows.]

Then again, it was in a whisper on the wind that I last heard your name.

[oh dear.]

[a small quirk of her eyebrow, and a civil face]

Oh? And who would you be?

[her eyes narrow, then she makes her face smooth out]

Loki. Thor spoke of you little. He was more concerned by the giant armor endangering the town.

Endangering you. Thor does not act without expectation of return. If you think the town meant a thing to him I invite you to tour any town he failed to save. I remind you of every genocide he failed to lift a finger to stop. I tell you, also, that he spoke no word of you upon his return, that you do not mistake his concern for what you might provide him for concern for you.

[He waves a dismissive hand, as though it's inconsequential.]

To trust in the nobility of Odin or his son is folly in the highest, as I can attest. They call me Liesmith, but the lies they spin are far more insidious, as they believe them.

I am sorry you have come to this place. Even he cannot fetch you away from here. I expect if he could the trouble would be too great to try – I remain, after all, and for three thousand years he called me brother.

Really. I saw that he sacrificed himself to get others to safety. He fought that thing armed with nothing but his fists then he got his hammer back. I don't think Heimdall can even see us here, for this has got to be a pocket universe hidden away. It's in books, it isn't fully real to be seen from Yggdrasil.

[small excuses, anything to hold some ground against doubt and worry, and here she is stuck in the same building as Loki. This is not the best news.]

Alice left once. I'm sure it can be done.

You would be ill-advised to take the princeling's epiphany as kindness. I offered him a way home. He took it.

[Nothing more or less than that. He smiles.]

It is equally ill-advised to draw conclusions as to the unreality of this place. Asgard too came from books, until you learned it was real -- is that not so? I have stepped into the spaces between things; sorcery has taught me much, granted me much. I have skipped between planets through methods even the Allfather has forgotten, and yet I am bounded here. Still -- I have no bad dreams.

[And counts himself therefore, if she follows, if she knows her literature, a king of infinite space.]

Nor do I carry for you any ill intent, though your hostility is understandable. Your perspective on the matter is, after all, a narrow one; I doubt he told you anything of the truth of me.

[Susan didn't often go about pitying people, it just wasn't in her nature, but she was a little tempted to start given the severity of recent events and the influx of new and increasingly unfortunate folks. This one didn't seem particularly out of sorts. She'd introduced herself, accepted that here wasn't where she thought it was, and her questions were even rather reasonable.

All in all, Susan approved.]

That's something of a difficult question to answer, I'm afraid. [Susan shook her head slightly and let out a short, resigned sigh.]

The strange events and ominous dangers are fairly standard, yes, but the warning bit though, while usually present, is generally more cryptic and considerably less helpful.

[Jane tries to be reasonable in new situations. It helps. And someone who is being useful and reasonable in return!]

I like the difficult questions. It gives a better sense of satisfaction when they're solved. So this is a new thing, then for the warning to make sense. Excellent. A change in pattern.

Excellent might be a bit of a stretch, but it does seem to be a pleasant-ish change. [Susan inclined her head, but still managed to look deeply suspicious of the whole enterprise.]

Hopefully it won't herald some new, ridiculous aspect to these events, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

[Of course, there was no sense ruminating on what could possibly be, not when it was inevitably going to show up and make itself all to clear, so Susan let the topic slide.]
