[The feed is initially dark and grainy, showing not a whole lot of anything, though there is sound. Specifically, the sound of someone taking a few steps, tripping, and falling over with a surprised sound that's not quite dignified.]

Ow...

[As the unfortunate new comer starts to right himself, his hand jostles against the device and closes around it automatically. The camera angle changes as the device is turned over, inspected, and then a very surprised and confused face appears on the feed.

Kaneki is pretty average looking, except for the eye patch. Right now, he's a bit scuffed, dusty, and what little can be seen in the faint light from the screen shows he's in the caves. He fumbles the device for a moment before he manages to hold it steady.]

Er... I think I'm in a hole...somehow. I don't know if there's anyone around or if I have reception at all but if there is someone...

[He offers a smile that's equal parts embarrassed, apologetic, and nervous, rubbing the back of his head with his free hand. Actually, maybe he's more nervous than the other two.]

I could use a hand, if there is.

[Knowing that someone is coming for him does ease Tohru a bit.]

I have plenty of time! I can do that. I'd be more than happy to!

[She manages to shake of the rest of her nerves and smiles at him.]

My name is Tohru Honda. It's nice to meet you!

[Kaneki smiles back, dropping his free hand to his side.]

I'm Kaneki Ken. It's nice to meet you, Honda-san.

Ah! You must be from Japan too then, right?

[Her whole face lights up when she asks - most people seem to be from America or Europe, so it's a nice reminder of home to meet other Japanese people.]

There are many people here, from all sorts of different worlds. Oh! Has anyone told you where we are though? This place is a world called Wonderland.

Mm. [He nods. Her enthusiasm is kind of cute.] I'm from Tokyo. The twentieth ward.

[He thinks back to the few transmissions he's had so far, trying to gather up the scattered information he'd received.]

I did hear it was Wonderland and that there are around a hundred people here. I wasn't told much more than, that, though.

Oh! I don't live directly in Tokyo, but I'm not very far away from it either. [~~Unfortunately, Fruits Basket is not terribly specific on exact locations.~~]

I can try to fill you in then, while you're waiting for help. Um, above ground there's a large mansion where everyone stays! No one knows how long they will be here, but while you're here you can have any room you would like. The closets give us almost anything, and the kitchens will give you any food you could ever want.

[Kaneki listens attentively. His expression turns thoughtful.]

When you say "give us" what do you mean, exactly? How does that work?

Well, every room inside the mansion has a closet, and if you go to the closet and think about something you want or need, the closet will give it to you! The kitchens work the same way. I don't know exactly how it works, though I've been told that it's magic.

So, at the very least you'll be able to make yourself comfortable here! ...Um, once you get out from underground, anyway.

It's like it's going out of its way to make us comfortable.

[Like that's some consolation for kidnapping people.]

It sounds convenient, though. Can the closets give us anything at all?

Almost! It does have itself limits, but I'm always surprised by just how much they can give us.

[Even after a year, she's still surprised now and then by what the closets can give to them.]

The limit seems to be that they won't give us anything specific from home. Photographs, objects that belonged to us...things like that, the closets can't give us.

It seemed like there had to be some limits to what it can do. But it sounds like it's still more convenient than anything else.

[Though...he does one to check one last thing about the closets.]

Can they give us food, though?

Uh-huh! Or, well. There are kitchens for that, and the cupboards in there work just like the closets in everyone's rooms. There's also a dining room you can eat at, and I help run a diner on the eighth floor. There's more than enough food here for everyone!

[It's a good thing too, considering how many people are in Wonderland. Tohru's really grateful for that.]

...Yeah. [Kaneki smiles a bit at her, pushing away any other thoughts of food.] It sounds like everyone can get by pretty well here.

Mm! Of course, most of us would still rather be at home, but I think that even with the difficulties there are many worse places we could have been trapped in. So I'm glad that we can get by as well as we do.

You're right. [The whole place could be caves.] I'm glad I got to talk to you, Tohru-chan. I feel a bit better about being stuck here, now.

I'm glad to hear it! I'm just happy I could help a little, even if I don't know how to get you out of there...

[She really wishes she did though. It looks dark and kind of scary down there...]
