[It's pretty early on the second day of the event--it's only just turning light outside--when Souji turns his camera on an interesting device he's made from stuff he's found around the area.]

I had to make one of these for a project in middle school. [He turns the camera around to point at himself.] I thought it might be handy if we manage to draw a crowd.

[Next, he turns the camera on a pile of junk--but heavy and sharp looking junk--that he's gathered. Based on his other zombie-event experiences, this stuff should work well enough.]

I'm going to need a hand to try it out, if anyone has some time.

[Souji smirks a little, totally agreeing with her assessment, and nods.]

[When Lily approaches, he goes to help her carry the sandbags.]

Thanks for bringing these. I think they'll help a lot.

[She looks incredibly relieved when he helps to lighten her load, out of breath by the time she drops her own beside his trebuchet. She's not exactly out of shape, but she hasn't had to carry anything heavy since she mastered certain charms ages ago.]

They'll fly far, at any rate-- and really hurt whatever they hit. Reduce those zoms to piles of bones, hopefully.

[Souji nudges the bags with his toe, nodding.]

The ones that are less...fresh should come apart easily. I guess it depends on how well we can aim at them, though.

[He indicates some of the junk he gathered, mostly jagged pieces of wood and metal scraps.]

These will probably spray out at a wider angle, since they're lighter. If nothing else, they should slow the zombies down.

[She grimaces when he brings freshness to mind, although she knows exactly what he means-- but it doesn't make it any less unappetizing.]

They should be brittle, so any kind of impact with this much momentum behind it should do serious damage.

[It wouldn't feel so great to the newer zombies, either.]

Could do a lot to thin the ranks before they get too close.

They might scatter trying to evade it, too, which would also help.

[A mob of zombies is way worse than a few in quick succession.]

Right. The fewer we have to deal with at once, the better. Their real strength is numbers.

[Otherwise, they're slow-- for the most part-- and not all that bright.]

I, ah-- also heard someone mention stairs? We might be able to find a way to involve those in our defense plans if we have Runners heading them off after they've scattered, in the event of a full-on undead assault.

Stairs?

[Souji guesses that makes sense. They do take some coordination and balance to manage. Short of raising the whole camp up on a platform, though, he's not sure how to use those except in a last-stand sort of situation.]

It's worth looking into.

[He looks at the trebuchet for a moment, wondering if it would be worth it to try to raise it up on a platform of some kind.]

I know stairs aren't exactly mobile, but it would be good to find out if there are any in the area to make use of during evasive maneuvers-- is that the right term for it? Oh, you know, whenever we have Runners creating diversions. I hear that happens a lot.

[She doesn't mean to sound flippant about it, it's just that everything seems so tiresome without magic.]

[It's hard not to sound flippant about something that's going to be gone (hopefully forever) in a few days.]

Ladders are mobile, though. If they can't handle stairs, they probably can't climb ladder rungs either.

That's an excellent idea. Easy to tote with you, and you can even pull it up and continue on your way once you're out of reach, if the zombies haven't swarmed it already.

[Souji smiles a bit.]

Let's look into that after we test this out.

[He's already gotten in a couple tests, but it doesn't hurt to ~~show off~~ double-check.]

Sounds like a plan to me.

[And really, Lily is used to being around people who feel the need to show off-- she's married to James, after all, and with as clever and resourceful as the trebuchet is, she can hardly hold Souji's pride against him.]
