Stanford Pines here. It has been brought to my attention that according to my timeline, I am really missing out on thirty years' worth of Earth's culture and media. I left my dimension in 1982 and returned in 2012.

So. What have I missed? Anyone have any recommendations? I'll even take something from another time period or planet if you think it's good.

I don't know how much help other people will be with the stuff from our world. I mean, there's plenty of other-dimensional stuff that's pretty cool, but it seems almost everything in our world is very slightly different from the stuff in everyone else's world. Wirt and I've been doing a thorough survey of the differences.

[AKA just friends watching stuff together but you know. For science.]

Uhh...Well, I know from Dipper that the media in our worlds is slightly different, and I'm only from 1989, but...most of the culture from my time is terrible. Like, actual garbage. There's so much neon and huge hair and all the music has synthesizers, which should definitely not count as a legitimate instrument. I mean there are some good things, I guess, but all the mainstream stuff is like terrible.

[A pause, as he remembers Dr. Pines is also great uncle to Mabel.]

...Please don't tell Mabel I said that though. She loves the 80s and she'll never ever let me hear the end of it.

[She has so many recs for you, buddy. So many recs.]

I m-mean, anime was practically invented in that timeframe, so you haven't s-seen any of the classics, uhm, h-have you? You gotta see Akira! And, uhm, Ghost In The Shell is super, s-super important! [She ponders for a second.] Oh! And you'd r-really love Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's g-got a huge scientific basis, too w-with some cool religious overtones... g-gosh, there's so many good ones!

Fuckin...

I mean, obviously you need to see the Two Brothers series. Best shit t-to come out of the multiverse in, fuck, I don't even know.

Man, you missed, you missed all of Pokemon. And Animal Crossing. Man, f-fuck you. I bet you're an elf nerd, aren't you. Fuck, there's, there's literally no way you're not a, a g-goddamn elf nerd. Well get ready to shit yourself, cause th-th-they went and made the goddamn Lord of the Rings into a big budget four movie franchise. And I mean, they're actually, they're not bad? For fantasy elves and, and orcs and, what the f-fuck ever, you know, it's. It's not terrible.

Titanic, too. James Cameron. F-Fuck that guy. It's shit, but you'll probably cry your dick off.

Oh and they, fuckers finally found the Higgs-Boson, that finally goddamn happened, like, like, you ffffucking idiots, l-like it was hiding behind some asshole's living room couch and no one thought to goddamn check that's how stupid this shit is, humanity is, god it's fucking useless sometimes, and of course no one thought to ask Rick Fucking Sanchez, only, only yanno, discovered that shit in my thirties, and it's not even, it's not even that fucking exciting, who the fuck cares about Higgs-Boson, what the fuck is a Boson, fuck off.

heh, man. that's a lot to cover.

[Fffff he wants to nerd out a bit but he barely remembers how. Plus he's still leery of people knowing what a science nerd he is. Was. Is.]

well, uh. there was this show, cosmos? space stuff, science. i forget when it came out but, yanno. seems like that'd be up your alley. or if science fiction is more your speed, there's...well, star trek, of course. but also farscape. less well known, but it was...

[It was freaking amazing, one of the best human shows he's ever seen, and he never managed to see the third season because he couldn't for the life of him find the DVDs in the dump and it's virtually impossible to pick up television signals from the Surface, so he never got to find out what the hell happened with that whole neural chip subplot and what ended up happening with Scorpius, because suddenly it was season 4 and everything was weird.]

...pretty good. living spaceships, weird aliens. stuff like that.

oh, and, uh. let's see, there was also...

[The Elegant Universe, and A Brief History of Time, and Red Dwarf and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy the adaptation for television (the movie wasn't as good), and...]

heh, i dunno. a lot of stuff. alphys probably has way more recommendations than me.

[Oh man, this is Henry's favorite thing. He loves showing Hook and Robin stuff and he replies back, the excitement evident in his voice.]

Hey, I'm Henry. And I kind of have experience showing people things like this. What are you most interested in learning about? A mix of everything?

Would you mind passing on any good recommendations? I feel very out of the loop culturally.

I've found that I'm quite fond of what they call cartoons. Though the gaps in my cultural education was much longer than yours, I'm afraid - my considerations might be considered dated for you.

look man 30 years outside the cultural vacuum means you got to stay untainted by our culture's perverted obsession with meaningless big budget noise as opposed to real meaningful human connection
you never had to listen to insufferable critics making horrible reviews of movies that are actual masterpieces provided that you actually think
so that gives you an advantage right there

some people say movies are best for escapism blah blah blah shouldn't make you think to hard
those people are idiots
art is there to make you think you know
rosswood: (tell him we're shooting a student film)

[personal profile] rosswood 2016-04-30 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
most of them honestly
made to make you think about what it is to be human and stuff
how the brain really works
neat stuff

yeah ok fair point
but some of the classics are good even if there the worst at understanding the internet
if you can get past some of those 80s "i'm jacked in" moments
