[video] IT IS ROCKS, WHAT COULD GO WRONG?
[Far below Wonderland's rolling hills and questionable forests lies a complex, cavernous maze that put the one in the gardens to shame - a veritable labyrinth of natural passages and crevices, pools and underwater tunnels. A subterranean system that has yet to be properly explored and documented.
Behold, then, Wonderland's very own intrepid explorer andwannabe archaeologist!
Evelyn has set up something of an encampment site a little ways from the basement steps into the caves. A steady drip...drip...drip in the background accompanies the brushing sounds of her tools on stone, and she very excitedly picks up some of her samples before taking them back to a lantern-lit table. She switches on her communicator.]
I've discovered something really quite remarkable, it- the geological strata here is a complex amalgamation of impossible stones and rock formations, many of which should be separated geographically by thousands of miles, much like the plants above ground, but here...here there are veins of pyrope garnet right next to limestone stalagmites, enormous calcium deposits, and chalk beds, of all things!
[Physically impossible, by all accounts. Next thing you know there will be dwarves mining for precious gems down here.]
I'm not certain if anyone else has made findings regarding the cave system, but if you have, please let me know; I'd very much like to share notes.

I understand,
[Evelyn nods sympathetically with a tiny smile, blowing dust from a chunk of tourmaline before taking a small, needle-like tool and scratching off calcified pieces.]
Intellect can be intimidating.
[ :) ]
So suck it.
The look he flashes isn't his least amused face, there's a hint of something that suggests he's not entirely serious- because he's trying, you know? Now that he's figured out these are all just people, just refugees, he can make an attempt at being... civil. Getting to know them. Whatever.]
Yeah, yeah. What's with the stupid rock?
And she knows full well that he's trying to make an effort - commendable, actually - so she's only teasing.]
The 'stupid rock' is tourmaline,
[Evelyn states matter-of-factly, using a small rag to wipe it off before holding it up to the lens.]
It's a bi-coloured stone most commonly found in Africa. What's unusual about it is that I discovered it next to stones only found in Appalachia, or Great Britain.
Tourmaline. Yep, doesn't ring any bells. He's not a rock guy. He actually, you know, gets laid.
Still, he's not completely stupid, so he frowns at the stupid rock.]
So basically the geography here was phoned in? Seems a little lazy for a superpowered diabolical world-building kidnapper.
The flora, fauna, and geology,
[she corrects him, tucking a curl of hair behind one ear.]
I'm afraid that Wonderland doesn't care much for how little sense it actually makes. Speaking of things not making sense,
[This is a perfectly valid segue.]
...your swift departure from our conversation the other day was a little uncalled for, don't you think?
[And rude. Did she mention rude?]
Not that he's complaining because- well, you should have seen the locals.
Flora and fauna he gets, though. At least, a little more than rocks. He knows how to track, he knows basic survival, hell, he's practically at Scout Leader levels of mastery in that department. He hadn't exactly been paying attention to the shrubbery in his quest for an exit, though, so he makes a mental note to check it out the next time he's in the forest.
He scowls at her a little at being called out on his abrupt exit.]
I was doing stuff.
[It's said more than a little defensively, and perhaps a touch petulantly as well. He's trying to do the investigating here, anyway, lady.]
So is this what people do when they're stuck here? Dig around and check out the Tourmaline?
[Video] 1/2
[Very informative, Dean, thank you. Evie will remember to call on you again the next time class has Show and Tell.]
[Video] 2/2
[But it was founded by Philip and another you.
Also, Evelyn's alcohol tolerance is abysmal.]
Jeeze. He'd say she's like Girl Sam, but Sam is like Girl Sam.
That next bit gets his attention, though.]
There's a bar on the fifth floor?
[He's on the fifth floor. Now there's a damn convenience if he ever heard one. Guess who's going to get plastered tonight?]
Now- Now you see here, Mister Winchester,
[If he ever wondered what it would sound like to be lectured by an English schoolmarm, this is as close as he's ever going to get to that.]
You ran away a bit too hurriedly the last time we talked, and I bloody well wasn't joking when I said that you and Philip were close friends. That bar is Philip's bar. If you're planning on running amok and getting yourself properly spifflicated, at least have the courtesy not to be an arse around him.
[Because she was the one who tended to Philip after Dean came back and didn't recognise him anymore.]
Yes ma'am.
[Give him a little credit. He's not about to go starting trouble in the one single alcohol carrying establishment on the grounds. Well, that isn't a fucking closet anyway.
And maybe he's eager to do a little recon on that Philip character. Just for curiosity's sake, is all. He's got to learn what he can about this place, and if he was close to somebody, they've probably got the full scoop. The more he knows, the sooner he can leave.
After a second, he frowns at her.]
Spifflicated? Seriously?
Evelyn resists the increasingly strong urge to roll her eyes. She spent a great deal of her early time in Wonderland being mocked for minor things regarding her origins.]
Someone should have told you about the residents here - how they're not all from the same place or time?
[She lets that sink in for a moment before adding:]
I'm from the year 1926.
[He knew, he just... didn't actually think far enough ahead to realize it would actually come up in everyday conversation.
He makes a frustrated noise- seriously, he's getting tired of time travel. It's all fun and games when you get to dress up, but with it comes to the little things? Straight up annoying.
He shakes his head.]
On the bright side, I bet the plumbing's way better here.
Check your time period privilege at the door, Mister Winchester.]
It is,
[Evie replies mildly.]
I do dislike having to avoid certain books in the library, though.
[She saw one labeled America's Involvement in World War II and dropped it like a hot potato. There are some things she'd rather not know about.]
Yeah, no, trust me. I get that.
[His own little trip to the future had been horrifying. There are just some things you can't un-know. If it's something he can't change, yeah, you can bet your ass he's a hell of a lot happier not knowing.
He sighs.]
Look, about before- I'm sorry, alright? For taking off. I just don't really do...
[People. Touchy-feely conversations. Sudden shocking realizations that he has a new brotherly obligation.]
[Evelyn suggests, lofting an eyebrow. Her tone suggests that she's teasing, at the very worst.]
Dean, I know you're not very good at making friends. It isn't as though you help yourself, you know.
[And there's absolutely no way he can argue with that. Which isn't to say that he doesn't have his reasons - everyone does - but this isn't the sort of place where you can just push people away and hope for the best. He's stuck, whether he likes it or not, and may very well have to start laying down roots.
Again.]
I help myself just fine, thanks.
[Helps himself keep people at a polite distance away and doesn't form close bonds. Judge him all you want, but it's the only way to stay sane in a life like his.
So, yeah, okay, she's probably right, but he's also stubborn.]
Look, what do you want me to do, huh? Get all cozy with you guys again and start all over from scratch? What happens when we get outta here, or someone dies, or I get a rock to the head and forget about you all over again? You really wanna keep going through this?
[Even in her own world, she's dealt with curses and really grumpy fellows coming back to life. Surely Dean can empathise. Here, she's already lost a life - not from anything tame, mind you, but because James Moriarty wanted to leave a few presents for Sherlock Holmes, and slit her throat in the library.
There have been Shadows, the Jabberwocky, ghosts and demons, sentient viruses, the living dead. The worst monsters of all are still people.]
I don't know, Dean. But is it really worth it to constantly push everyone away? Whatever you were doing before you got here, it's not happening anymore. Time has stopped. And you may only be here for a couple of weeks, a month - but you might be here for a year. We've all lost people. It happens.
[For Heaven's sake, you could start a case study on the long-term psychological effects that has on people in Wonderland.]
So don't you for one second think that you're going to be the big damn hero by saving everyone the effort of getting to know you again.
[Because that has to be the most selfish thing she's ever heard.]
