[The explosions sends her flying backwards and her head cracks against a wall that sends sparks dancing in front of her eyes.

Rolling, Ellen pushes herself up. The phone next to her chirps and she grabs it, unwittingly turning on the video function. There's nails in her body and bruises blossoming along her skin. Scrapes and gashes seep blood. The first breath hurts and gouges into her lungs.]

So much for Paradise.

[She forces herself into a sitting position and notices the phone.]

Great, cell service in Heaven. Damn I could use a drink.

[The second deep breath hurts just as much as the first. Damn, isn't there supposed to be a happily ever after? This sucks.]

Cas, just so you know, Heaven sucks.

[John's lips curve in a way that's far more smirk than smile. The expression is all smugness and confidence; it's not sweet or gentle like John was at this age.]

You're half right. The body is his, but I'm afraid he's not available at the moment.

[She's not sure, but there's something...]

... Michael...?

[Because it's the only thing that makes sense.]

[She's quick on the uptake, he'll give her that much. Michael inclines his head in a slight nod of acknowledgement. Second time's the charm, here, apparently.]

Hello, Ellen. Before you ask: John is fine, and I intend to keep him that way until I can put him back.

[She's too tired, and too injured to argue with him. She wants to rage at him, to scream about the boys, about John, about... all of it. Instead, she just closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.]

Be sure that you take care of him. He's family.

Is he, now?

[He lifts an eyebrow at her. As far as he's aware, Ellen and John didn't part on very friendly terms. It's the younger Winchesters she's attached to - it's always Dean and Sam. Sometimes his vessel has entirely too many allies for his tastes.]

Given that I'm currently bound to his body, I'm not planning to do anything reckless with it.

He is.

[They may not have been on the best of terms, but he's still family. Just because you're mad at someone doesn't stop that.]

Planning usually isn't an angelic strong suit.

You wouldn't say that if you had any idea how much effort we put into shaping John.

[Not to mention his sons, who were the real prize, but it had taken no small amount of planning to arrange for their births.]

Oh, I wouldn't be surprised at all. But I doubt the boys, or John, just fell in line with what you wanted.

[She knows them too well.]

John was actually very accommodating; I didn't have to ask for his permission more than once.

[Though he had had significant leverage at the time.

The Winchester juniors, of course, weren't nearly as easy. Being the exception seemed to suit Sam and Dean.]

What did you have hanging over his head?

[She knows John pretty well.]

His wife was dying. I offered to save her.

[He'll avoid mentioning the fact that he's part of the reason Mary needed saving in the first place. It's not really how he sees the situation, anyway. Anna's actions were her own.]

But you couldn't save her from the demon?

[She can't believe that.]

[She's not quite wrong, but not quite right, either. It's impressive what barriers one can erect when they simply believe certain outcomes inevitable.

Not that saving Mary would have served his endgame, anyway.]

No. That was fate. We gave Dean the opportunity to try, once - ask him about it, see how well that went for him.
