[The feed is initially dark and grainy, showing not a whole lot of anything, though there is sound. Specifically, the sound of someone taking a few steps, tripping, and falling over with a surprised sound that's not quite dignified.]

Ow...

[As the unfortunate new comer starts to right himself, his hand jostles against the device and closes around it automatically. The camera angle changes as the device is turned over, inspected, and then a very surprised and confused face appears on the feed.

Kaneki is pretty average looking, except for the eye patch. Right now, he's a bit scuffed, dusty, and what little can be seen in the faint light from the screen shows he's in the caves. He fumbles the device for a moment before he manages to hold it steady.]

Er... I think I'm in a hole...somehow. I don't know if there's anyone around or if I have reception at all but if there is someone...

[He offers a smile that's equal parts embarrassed, apologetic, and nervous, rubbing the back of his head with his free hand. Actually, maybe he's more nervous than the other two.]

I could use a hand, if there is.

It depends. Some are polar opposites, others have a few things that have changed.

[Minato was now down in the basement and entered through to the caves. Now was just a matter of finding Kaneki.]

[Kaneki can see that the setting behind Minato has changed.]

Should I try yelling? Maybe you'll hear me.

[If it echoes, he's not sure how much help it will be in finding a direction to go, though.]

It's okay. I'll find you.

[Minato tried something, switching out to Kartikeya to have him use Mahamaon to spread some light even if just for a second to see what was around him. Luckily Kaneki wasn't in the range of the attack, but unfortunately it meant he hadn't found him yet.]

I think you're farther along than I thought.

[And walking further in, remembering what it looked like when the light was bright for that brief moment.]

[Kaneki can't see the flash from where he is, though he's peering around.]

Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm not really sure how I got here in the first place.

It's okay. People end up in different places when they first arrive. I ended up in the ocean. Twice.

[Minato didn't know if it was just himself and his link to this place that made him end up there, or if it were just a cruel trick. The caves weren't all that complicated, and he expected he'd find the other boy soon enough.]

Twice? This is your second time--oh! I think I hear you.

[If those weren't Minato's footsteps he heard, this was about to get really creepy.]

[Minato nodded, and despite how dim it was, he did see Kaneki where he was, thanks to the glow of the communication devices.]

There you are. Are you all right?

[With a clearer view of the area, Kaneki makes his way toward Minato. Though he's a bit dusty, he's remarkably unscathed considering the falling and stumbling he'd been doing. Other than the eye patch, there's no evidence of even small injuries on him.]

I'm okay. [Kaneki's smile is embarrassed, but good-natured.] I'm sorry for the trouble. I'm Kaneki Ken.

It's no trouble. I'm Arisato Minato. Nice to meet you.

[Minato thought it was no problem, saving someone from out of the caves. Really, not the best place to end up on arrival. And it had been a while since he met anyone who was Japanese.]

Follow me.

[Minato could lead the way out. He could explain more up there or on the way.]

Nice to meet you, Minato-kun. [He's guessing that Minato is a bit younger than him, so he goes with that form of address.

He follows Minato, drawing up beside him within a few steps.]

You called this place Wonderland earlier. Is that a reference to the the books by Lewis Carrol?

[Minato was glad that Kaneki was walking next to him. It made it easier to talk to him and he could keep an eye on him too.]

It is. There are some characters from the book here, but the similarities end there.

We're here so the Mansion can eat our memories for the most part.

[Kaneki nods, keeping pace with Minato now.]

You mentioned that. But you don't sound very worried about it.

[He hasn't realized yet that Minato doesn't often sound worried about anything.]

[There were lots of memories to pick and choose from. Minato could only hope that if he did ever get to go home, he'd get them back. That's what seemed to happen.]

It's okay. [They'd just deal with it.]

You're from Japan? What year is it?

[May as well start with something like that, get to know Kaneki better.]

And I am from Japan. From Tokyo. I've lived there all my life...until now, I guess.

[2013 was farther ahead than even Souji. Minato filed that information away for later.]

Iwatodai. 2010. I lived in Tokyo for a while, but i'm from Iwatodai.

[Kaneki's not sure he's ever heard of Iwatodai, but he'll look it up later on.]

How old are you, Minato-kun?

[Minato guessed that Kaneki was a bit older than him, but it couldn't be by much.]

17. [Forever.] And you?

I'm nineteen. [~~Because apparently I was wrong and he's a second year college student?~~] I was studying literature at Kamii University.

What's it like?

[University life and all that. Too bad it had got disrupted.]

At Kamii? [Kaneki has to take a second to think about that.] It's a pretty big campus with a lot of students. It's really got a wide variety of programs.

I guess my experience there is pretty average, if there is such a thing.

[Minato listened. What Kaneki said seemed pretty normal, yeah.]

Average is fine. Lots of people would like to be average.

Yeah... I think that's understandable.

[Ugh, now he's thinking about depressing things. Time to change the subject elsewhere.]

Are you in your third year of high school, Minato-kun? You'll be taking entrance exams soon, then. What do you want to study?

[Minato opened the door to out of the basement and to the Mansion proper.]

I finished my second year. And if I can, medicine.

[He smiled a little.]

I'll think about my third year when it actually happens.

That's probably for the best. Studying for exams is pretty serious work, depending on where you want to be accepted, but it's not the only thing to focus on, even during third year. ...No matter what your teachers and parents tell you.
