Okay, public service announcement, here: if you don't filter or lock your messages, we can all see them. And read and hear them. Which usually doesn't matter, but just... I mean, if it's quote-unquote sensitive information, you probably don't want it on the public network. And we don't, either. Usually. And even then... I mean, there're a handful of tech-savvy people in the mansion, so even if it's encrypted, it still could be, you know, decrypted. I'm just saying, it's almost always better to talk in person if you're making big plans or swapping secrets.
That said, does anyone know the network's origin? I mean, I never pegged the Queen of Hearts or the Duchess or whoever to be good with computers. It had to start somewhere, by someone who knew what they were doing. It's a pretty complicated system.
Just... don't tell me it was "magic." [ Sigh. ]

What's up? Dean sending out compromising pictures again? Or commentaries on his love affair with Dr Sexy?
no subject
No, God, I hope not. [ He probably is, honestly, but Sam wants nothing to do with that. ] Nothing's up, just thought it was worth saying.

So they say. And it might still be magic, but I don't want to rule anything out.

[James lets out an overly dramatic sigh.]
That being said though, it's been here longer than I have, so it's more than three years old at the least.
Voice
[ Or... whatever. ]
Yeah? Huh. And you've been here-- You're one of the longest, right?

But - I've also never run into anything quite this powerful, either. There's no telling what it could've accomplished.

[ She's considered asking the mansion at large such a question before, but usually the whole place goes wonky when she remembers to do it. As it is, Sam in charge of that kind of thing makes her feel confident they'll learn something. ]
I haven't been able to do much on these things other than make stuff private. It's not like there's heavy duty security, but I can't even get them to do some sort of GPS tracking. Seems like something even these things should have, you know?
Yeah, it does. They're... almost primitive, as far as communication devices go.

Yeah. It's a figure of speech. Uh-- Would it help if I sent over directions, so you can try it out yourself? It's for... if you're sending messages you want to be private, or for only certain people to see--or not see.

I'm not your intended audience, I can't offer you insight into the matter.
[The rules for conversing this way seem awfully casual, but even Victor, who isn't always mannerly at the best of times, feels it's fair to explain he's one of the people still learning these subjects, not an authority on them.]
But if you're open to entertaining other questions, what do you know about the origins of the network outside of this environment? I'd be interested to hear from someone who has the... ah, tech experience?
[Is that what people like Sam would call it? He's gotten this far largely through trial and error, but he doesn't even try to pretend he has a native understanding of the technology or its vocabulary.]
voice;
[ Which, hopefully, would not talk back. ]
I can tell you it's both simpler and more complicated than a lot of networks I've seen?

But Sam. If you warn all the people not to post their personal crap where we can all see it, what are we going to do to keep ourselves entertained?

Okay, I don't... know half the words you said, but I know what encryption is. And you're saying it can be applied to the "telephone" they all gave us?
[ Well duh! He gets that from only on angle. ]
So, you mean just use ciphers on the "text" feature...? Jesus H., talk about effort!

It'd be worth it; if you've got something to say to one or two people and don't want everyone to be able to look at it... you know?

And how does one go about 'locking' or 'filtering' our quote-unquote 'sensitive information'? [Complete with finger quotes.]
Never had need of a mobile back home and these things seem a bit beyond what I remember seeing in Buffy's--in... somewhere. Not important.
And while we're at it, [Here he goes... making friends since the 1800s.] there's no reason to say it isn't some witch-y business linking all the expensive paper weights together. Is that really the most pressing question that comes to mind? You're living in Lewis Carroll's acid trip and it's the mobile service that's got your knickers in a twist?
[ Knickers. Jesus. ]
Nothing like that. I'm just trying to learn more about this place. Might as well, since we're stuck here indefinitely.
