In the wake of our most recent event and regarding the fate of those who lose their fifth life, I would like to propose a new series of data collection on mansion residents. It is my opinion that the instatement of a “death watch” - that is, an archival record of extant resident deaths that have occurred - should be created and maintained, and would serve as a valuable resource for the protection of those who are at risk.

[This is the difficult part: persuading people to share this sort of thing about themselves, knowing what it does to others and how it can hurt, is no easy task. She believed as much when she first spoke with Shepard on the subject, and believes the same now. Evelyn herself does not like to offer personal information unless asked, but knows the burden of carrying that suffering on one's own and how easily an environment can fall to fear.]

I understand that this is very private, very personal information. I understand it is traumatic, and not something that many people want to share. Therefore it is incumbent upon me to stress the critical severity of this situation, and assure you that you are not alone.

I myself have lost four lives here.

In disclosing as much, I hope that others can be swayed to believe in the efficacy of this database, and would urge residents to volunteer their respective death tolls to build the record. Residents who submit information to the watch on their numbers may do so to me privately, if there is concern about embarrassment or persecution from peers.

[It is a valid concern, and one which she has agonised over.]

Commander Shepard’s confirmation from the Queen of Hearts that those who are remade after their last demise are conscripted as spies is extremely troubling. Regardless of the veracity of the information given its source, we as unwilling residents do not have the luxury of allowing for that liability. For those concerned about their safety, I will be actively working with the commander, who is well-equipped to establish and manage security procedures once the record has been transcribed and analysed. This is a living document, and is expected to require additions over time.

I am aware that this is a drastic measure, but a measure worth taking. Please feel free to direct all responses and queries to myself and Commander Shepard.

[OOC NOTE: I realize this is a hot button issue as has generated a lot of replies, which is great! In order to keep myself sane, I'm going to have to cut it off here and request that no one else respond in this post. [He's lying.

Or rather, he's withholding the truth. No one goes into such great detail only to peter off near the end and say it wasn't anything at all. Evelyn's mouth tightens, but she doesn't call it to attention.]

...I loved someone once - trusted them, immensely - who lied to me for months. I was trying to find this- I was following these sporadic murders happening around the mansion that we believed belonged to the same killer. It tore me apart, not knowing. The uncertainty. He'd known, the entire time, apparently. Who it was. He'd been complicit. I felt-

[Evelyn looks away from the camera, taking a deep breath and sighing.]

I felt like nothing after I knew. Like I had nothing.

[ Well, shit.

No, he hasn't disconnected, despite the long silence. Just...what the fuck are you supposed to say to that? What the fuck is he supposed to say, when that story basically feels like someone ripping open another hole in his chest? ]

...why are you telling me this? [His voice isn't small, but it sounds more like a croak. ]

You too. I'm sure you're getting a lot of this but like, maybe stop dying? I'm okay not getting more proof of what happens at five deaths.

I died because of it.

[She doesn't immediately answer his question, one turn for his own manner of avoiding the subject. Not that she intends to withhold information, only that there are important parts yet to note.]

My third. It was- ah, a knife, maybe three or four ribs up from the bottom. [Almost distractedly, the taps the spot with her fingers. Her tone is calm, collected - bordering on clinical, but the expression is tight. This is not an easy subject.] Perforated my lung. It was the killer, of course, not the man I had loved. In that moment, they felt the same.

[His commanding officer had been a part of what happened to him, she knows now, and in an attempt to alleviate and acknowledge that, Evelyn fixes him with a intent look once more. These are not sympathies. Just truths.]

It hurts...almost more, to be betrayed. I'm sorry it happened to you.

[He probably has a scar in the same place--he's been shot, stabbed, power drilled, you name it. So he knows the place she's talking about. It hurts. A lot. Even if you don't die. Even if it is just about a knife, and not about the hand holding the knife.

And he knows, you don't share this kind of high caliber stuff for nothing. It takes him a moment to start talking, like he's steeling himself up for it. ]

They pulled life support off me after three days. Three days, and they thought I was going to finally die. Three days stuck in a body, hooked up to every goddam machine they had, stuck with the memory of my daughter's goddam blood spilling out over my legs.

They wanted me dead. I wanted me dead--anything would be better than that.

[Was that enough? Did it balance the scale of what she'd told him? Maybe. ]

My CO. Taught me to shoot, taught me everything I knew about how to be a good goddam Marine.

I was a good goddam Marine.

He was behind it. The shooting. My family dying.

[Was THAT enough? ...it was enough.]

( In fact, it makes it especially not okay that she was brought here to be killed over and over again after dying in her own world. It's terrible, but he doubts she wants to relive that or think too much on it. So instead he shifts on his feet. )

Thanks for doing all this. It's brave given- ( she's the furthest along in terms of deaths. ) I don't want to take up too much of your time since I'm sure you have lots of people replying, but I wanted to say that at least.

[She nods.] I can confirm it, then. That's what happened with Shaun. He and I died during the floods, then he died again, more recently, when those Asgardian creatures attacked. He stayed down for 24 hours. I'd want confirmation from at least one other person to be sure, though. If we can get it.

[A slim almost-smile.]

I'm a journalist, Ms. O'Connell. I understand that struggle.

Understandable. In that case, I think you are the best person that is well suited for this. As mentioned before, I think this is a good idea, and I was thinking about starting up a log myself, but seeing as how I haven't died, I'm not sure if anyone would be willing to share something this personal.

I should probably account for my brother too. I don't think he would reply to something like this, but. He died in that flooding event as well. So, he's at one.

[That bit is even harder to say, both because Greg is so young to have died and because it's an obvious failing on his part as a big brother, and that's difficult to admit.]

That's their prerogative. The reason I gave my numbers in the first place is to make others feel safe about coming forward and talking about this. Not to encourage persecution.

With your- [Excessively paranoid.] -logic, someone already could have been collecting this information. A Mirror might be doing it. The Queen is certainly doing it - we have confirmation there.

It's certainly in the works - right now I'm gathering interest, I believe a vetting process might be employed, but it's not exactly my division.

[Familiar with tactics and strategy from a theoretical standpoint, less from experiential, Evelyn knows where her skills are strongest.]

[It might be worth it to start breaking mirrors when someone dies, so Mirrors can't report on it or whatever it is they do.]

[He's cracking wise, but the subject itself is still an uncomfortable. Evelyn realises he's doing his best to ease the tension but it doesn't make her feel any safer.]

I have morals and a gun, Seth, [Evelyn sighs, rubbing at the bridge of her nose.] Being discerning is important.

I don't think it was, Wendy. I'm sure he appreciated it.

He was a self-sacrificing sort of person, it's what made him a good man.

[Cullen it is, then. Evelyn will just quietly ignore the fact that he looked as her as though she had lobsters crawling out of her ears.]

It's...certainly a task.

[Said with no small amount of tiredness, because while she anticipated some complicity, she didn't expect quite the amount of derision and disagreement that she has received. It doesn't matter. They haven't been here as long as she has. None of them knew Philip the way she did.]

I suppose...if one were to count the death I experienced in my own world, then it would be five, but. Yes.

[Panic and secrets are her primary concern, things that Evelyn wanted to mitigate by being as transparent as she possibly could with the information she has offered the populace.

She isn't certain that it's not killing them faster after all.]

I've been receiving a lot...constructive criticism about the likelihood of people lying, but...isn't any answer better than no answer at all? Better than not even having an estimate?

I've been fielding the same queries over and over regarding the accuracy of the data - an issue I am aware of - and the likelihood of people lying, of which I am also aware. I'm a historian - a researcher - not a scientist, but I know this place better than anyone.

[The stress in her voice conveys that she is adamant, and not trying to fight. At its core this is an effort to help people, something she has consistently done since she first arrived in this place.]

And I know that having any answer is significantly better than having no answer at all.
