In the wake of our most recent event and regarding the fate of those who lose their fifth life, I would like to propose a new series of data collection on mansion residents. It is my opinion that the instatement of a “death watch” - that is, an archival record of extant resident deaths that have occurred - should be created and maintained, and would serve as a valuable resource for the protection of those who are at risk.

[This is the difficult part: persuading people to share this sort of thing about themselves, knowing what it does to others and how it can hurt, is no easy task. She believed as much when she first spoke with Shepard on the subject, and believes the same now. Evelyn herself does not like to offer personal information unless asked, but knows the burden of carrying that suffering on one's own and how easily an environment can fall to fear.]

I understand that this is very private, very personal information. I understand it is traumatic, and not something that many people want to share. Therefore it is incumbent upon me to stress the critical severity of this situation, and assure you that you are not alone.

I myself have lost four lives here.

In disclosing as much, I hope that others can be swayed to believe in the efficacy of this database, and would urge residents to volunteer their respective death tolls to build the record. Residents who submit information to the watch on their numbers may do so to me privately, if there is concern about embarrassment or persecution from peers.

[It is a valid concern, and one which she has agonised over.]

Commander Shepard’s confirmation from the Queen of Hearts that those who are remade after their last demise are conscripted as spies is extremely troubling. Regardless of the veracity of the information given its source, we as unwilling residents do not have the luxury of allowing for that liability. For those concerned about their safety, I will be actively working with the commander, who is well-equipped to establish and manage security procedures once the record has been transcribed and analysed. This is a living document, and is expected to require additions over time.

I am aware that this is a drastic measure, but a measure worth taking. Please feel free to direct all responses and queries to myself and Commander Shepard.

[Evelyn tsks mildly, raising an eyebrow. Seth may be joking - or perhaps not, sometimes it's difficult to tell - but the last time a group of people wanted to keep her safe, they shoved her in a bedroom and locked the door.

Unsurprisingly, the strategy was not well-formed.]

Just something to ponder. I mean, I'm not the one that is likely winning the most likely to be the psycho queen's bff. Speaking of, if it happens? Can you kill my mirror self while you're over there? Thanks.

Oh I don't doubt it. Most of them have morals though. So many. I don't get that.

[He sighs, shaking his head as if he didn't get that. Not at all.]

[He's cracking wise, but the subject itself is still an uncomfortable. Evelyn realises he's doing his best to ease the tension but it doesn't make her feel any safer.]

And he has none and fangs. Trust me, you'd be saving yourself some trouble.

[And yet, he's got something else he wants to propose.]</small. Why are you so sure the fifth death will really do that? We're playing by what they've told us. Why are you so sure this is the truth, and not what they want us to believe so we're not looking for the truth?

The last person to die five times - the only person that we know of to die that many times here - was my closest friend.

When he came back, he conveyed that he had to give up something to be remade. He sacrificed his voice. God knows what else. I don't want to implicate him in treachery because I don't believe he was doing anything treacherous - if you died, and the only choice you had was to give up something in order to come back, wouldn't you?

This...this fear that a spy could give the Queen of Hearts any more information than she already receives from the Mirrors is ridiculous. But I don't think that should stop us from wanting to keep track of people's deaths to prevent them from dying at all.

I get that the fifth death fucks with people. But why is anyone buying what they're telling us?

Why not just snatch me up to the other side and let my mirror take my place? Or yours? Or one of the kids? Someone that people wouldn't question. How would we know the difference if she worked on getting them to act right?

[He's put thought into this too, just not buying the party line.]

I don't buy it either, but this listing is stirring people up. It's making people worry and humans are fucking stupid when they worry. What happens when some start lying, fearing what might happen? Or someone comes after you, and others, because they even think they're close? What are you all going to do then?

You sound like a man with a tinfoil hat.

[Evelyn says without batting an eye, because this isn't the first Worst Case Scenario claim she's heard and it certainly won't be the last.]

Mirrors are different. They have personalities of their own. The Queen doesn't remake them at her leisure, it's an effort, and it would get noticed. If people lie, they lie, and anyone can lie at any time. That's a fact. Did it ever occur to you that there is no distinguishable difference between the intelligence that someone could glean through the looking glass with the near-constant surveillance that Mirrors have, and the intelligence that can be gathered with a spy in our midst?

[Evelyn can't see what Philip would have known that would have made him a valuable asset to the Queen of Hearts. There was nothing of Wonderland-related relevance that wasn't already accessibly to Her Majesty.]

If someone comes after me, at least I'll have done what I wanted to do. At least I'll have done something.

I keep it on my bedside table. Makes sleeping easier.

You're making my point. Attacking you, or anyone else, is stupid. Especially when it's coming from their information. They go into our heads and take memories, what else can they do? So why play this game of you all must die to feed the organism but don't die too many times or we own you? Feels like a plot to me.

[And one that could get people hurt. Not that he cared about that on the whole, but when it was his people it mattered. He counts Evelyn in those numbers even if like Kate and Chloe, she doesn't need his protection. Doesn't change he feels that way.]

Not arguing that, Evelyn. Just don't give them ammo against you. Never give people ammo they can use against you. Don't give away the advantages you have.
