002 ✦ Video/Action for Coffee Shop

Ok, I'll try and keep this short and sweet. There should have been a little gift outside your door in the form of chocolate with a nifty logo on it.

[A task that would have been ridiculously annoying if she hadn't had help in the form of one Percy Jackson.]

Since I've been here for like 6ish months, and it's clear I'm not going home any time soon - I figured I might as well do something semi-productive.

[No, this has absolutely nothing to do with her recent death - nope. Not at all.]

Coffee shop's open for business on the 1st floor. You can't miss it - it's right next to the training center so stop in and get your java fix sometime. Also, I guess if people want to help out, I def won't say no.

[It's not like it's a legit legit business with paperwork and things like paychecks. Makes things way less messy that way.]

One more thing before I forget - if I'm not around, I don't object to people doing their own thing as long as you don't burn it down or break everything and leave a mess in your wake. That happens and I'll find you and I will kick your butt. Don't think that I won't. Because I will.

[Or she'll call for back-up to do the butt kicking. DETAILS.]

I'll be here hanging out so stop in and say hi. We also have pie courtesy of Ned, so that's a thing. There's also non-caffeinated drinks like tea and decaf if caffeine isn't your thing.

Oh!If anybody's up for it, I'm totes looking for guinea pigs to test coffee things out on so just let me know if you're game.

[And with that that, she ends the feed and returns to setting up various colored coffee mugs behind the bar.]

[It makes sense that a scientist like Jane would have to burn the candle at both ends, so Steve can understand that. When Darcy mentions her time at college, he raises an eyebrow. He never got the chance to go himself, but he almost had.

Then Pearl Harbor happened.]

What did you major in?

[Steve takes the cup with a grateful nod and then has a sip. The caffeine won't have any affect on him, but he's come to like the taste.

Darcy had mentioned the pie in her original broadcast. Steve has no idea who Ned is, but it's hard to say no to a homemade slice of pie.] What kinds do you have?

Political Science.

[A major that had absolutely nothing to do with astrophysics. So if he was expecting something science-y like biology or physics - surprise. She grabs a cup of coffee for herself, eyes drifting to see what they've still got from Ned's delivery.]

We've got some of his holiday pies, including a dutch apple that's super good. Goes great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

[So America, very much wow.

She's tempted to ask him questions in return, although asking about college versus asking about war seemed like an unfair trade for information. Especially since a solid chunk of his history she had committed to memory from her studies.]

[Political Science is definitely from out of left field, but plenty of people end up doing something entirely different from their area of study. Besides, at this point Darcy's an intern -- Steve assumes she's got greater goals in mind for the future.

Or that she did before she found out that aliens were real. It's got to be hard to walk away from all that.

When she shows him the pies on offer and suggests one in particular, Steve is instantly sold. Who can say no to some good ol' apple pie? Not Steve, that's for sure.] That sounds great, thanks. I should probably find a way to pay you back for this.

[Darcy probably doesn't expect it, but it's the principle of the matter.

Steve leans forward against the counter and watches as Darcy plates the piece of pie. It looks amazing.] So... was the original plan to get into politics, then?

You realize I won't accept anything you try to offer as payback, right? I think I still owe you for a few things.

[She gives him a look before grabbing the plate of apple pie, heating it up a little to give it that extra boost of tastiness before adding a scoop of ice cream for good measure. She doesn't hold back the small laugh at the question, grabbing a fork for him before answering.]

No. I don't have the stomach for full-on politics.

[It was all a game of who could lie better and who made better deals over drinks and expensive food. Her time with Jane had definitely opened up her eyes to a few things, even before the aliens. Sure it had originally been a vessel towards graduation, but so much had changed. She'd gotten the degree and the six credits, but damned if she knew what to do with it all now.]

It was more of a focus on helping people who couldn't help themselves - human rights and that kind of stuff.

[She'd had all sorts of idealistic plans on how she was going to help people - save the world in her own way. Even if it was just on a small scale - it would be something. Grabbing another fork, she hops up to sit on the counter behind the bar - stealing a bite of the pie before asking a question of her own.]

What about you - did you have any big dreams or aspirations before the army?

[No doubt Darcy believes that she owes him for saving her from the Mirrors back during that whole mess, but Steve didn't do it expecting anything in return. He's never been that kind of person.] What, you won't even take a sketch? [He takes the plate from her and tries a bite of the pie with a good spoonful of ice cream on top.

It's amazingly good, way better than anything the closets could give him, and for a moment his eyelids flutter shut as he just enjoys. But then Darcy gets into what her original plans had been, and he opens them again, fixing her with a fond smile.

She wants to help people. That's something he admires, naturally.]

Me? Well, speaking of sketches... I was gonna join art school. But I think eventually I would have found a productive way to help people too.

[Something that even a small and sickly person could do. Steve takes another bite of pie, a pondering look on his face as he chews and swallows.]

Back then, I was pretty frustrated. Maybe even angry. I picked a lot of fights with bullies, I guess because I wanted to teach them a lesson. But I should have found other ways to try and help.

[Though even now, Steve won't stand by if he sees someone acting out of line.]

[Ok, she wouldn't say no to a sketch. That'd actually be pretty awesome. She sips at her coffee listening. The whole serum thing hadn't exactly been a national secret or anything like that, but she didn't know all that much about his life before. It was interesting, especially with the art info. She vaguely remembers him bringing a sketch book to her room when he'd stopped by to check on her but there'd been a lot on her mind - too much to actually notice it. Register the info on a deeper level.]

Art can totally help people.

[People could connect with a piece of art - sometimes enough to evoke a variety of emotions. Not everything needed to be an active way to help people, at times the passive stuff served as a more long term assist.]

Isn't that part of life, though? Figuring things out the hard way? Life lessons and all that?

[Although she's one to talk. She's been avoiding her life lessons in favor of throwing herself into projects and helping Jane not only here but at home.]

[Art may be able to help in some ways. It can be healing, it can bring people joy or even closure for something they're struggling with, but Steve's not sure that would have been enough for him. Now that he's Captain America, it's pretty hard for him to imagine living out a more normal life, but he would have become an activist or gotten involved in some way, he's sure.

Darcy makes a good point, though. He'd been young and there'd been a lot to learn, and he doesn't actually regret how he handled his teenager years, all the black eyes and chipped teeth. Maybe he'd at least gotten through to some people in the process. He can hope.

Steve nods as he takes another bite of the pie, and then finally takes a seat so that he can give the delicious snack more of his attention.]

So I'm guessing that for now, you want to stick with Jane and help her, right? [That's been Darcy's MO since they all got here. This coffee shop is one of the first projects she's taken on on her own.]

[That's... complicated. At best. When she'd been sent home, it'd been a serious test for Jane on surviving on her own and she'd passed. It'd been weird coming back, almost feeling like she didn't really have a job to do anymore. Jane was flourishing on her own, with other scientists to rely on that were a lot more sane than Erik.

It left her to find her own path, something she'd been avoiding with Jane. It was so easy to tell herself that Jane needed her - couldn't function without her... And yet - surprise she totally can.

Her face falls a little, giving what she hopes comes off as a casual shrug.]

We'll see. One can only deal with so much science time and large words that make no sense before you need a break.

[That works. Sure.]

I don't expect to be with Jane forever. Especially since Thor came back before I got dropped in here again.

[Being a third wheel was so not her style.]

[Even if Darcy expression only shifts for a moment, Steve still catches it and he realizes he's stumbled upon what might be a touchy subject. He's not sure how he keeps managing to do that, and in this case he feels particularly bad about it since Darcy's been through enough already.

Granted, it makes sense that she wants to move on. Who would want to be an intern for forever? That's usually meant to be a temporary thing. Not that Steve imagines that Thor or Jane would mind if Darcy stuck around, but he can understand the awkwardness there too.]

Fair enough. [He shrugs and takes another bite of pie, only speaking up again after he's swallowed the food.] So, what's next in the cards then?

[For now, there's just Wonderland, but Darcy must have considered what will be in store for her after that.]

I don't know. I mean, Thor and Jane might actually try the whole dating thing. Erik's still messed up from Loki... You're from ahead of me in our world - you probably have a way better idea than I do.

[Because if Bucky's future was also ahead of hers and he was kicking people off of helicarriers, it didn't bode well for a lot of reasons. It also possibly meant there were other Hydra people around, since that was apparently still a thing.

With a small shrug, she sighs and runs a hand through her hair.]

Short term, probably just getting this place off its feet and trying to stay ahead of whatever else this place might chuck at us.

What about you? Any big plans?

[Steve nods, because he has seen what the future holds, even if he can't speak specifically to what's going on with Thor, Jane, and Darcy. But he's got the feeling that a lot's going to change in light of SHIELD's fall. Not all of it will be good, either, even though he has no regrets about what he did.

Darcy's Wonderland goals seem fair enough, and Steve nods and takes a quick glance around the coffee shop again.] It looks like you're well on your way.

[As for him? Well, he doesn't have to hesitate much with his answers. The only reason he does is because Bucky's future is still not a pleasant topic of discussion.] Back home, it's just looking for Bucky. Here, my main concern is making sure that everyone around me stays safe. [Though he's already failed in that.] And getting to the bottom of this place.

[There's a certain amount of pride that goes into things like this, even if she hadn't done the heavy lifting on it. It had been pulled from her thoughts, having spent a ridiculous amount of time just thinking about it - designing it in her mind so the bones would be there. Everything else had been a piece of cake, just pulling things from the closet and keeping busy.

She gives a small nod, taking another look around - although her look covers more things that she's eager to fix and change - add to... Details here and there as she settles into the whole thing a little more.

It's understandable that his first and foremost task back home would be trying to track down his friend, especially with what little she knew. Although that really was a worry for later since who knew just how long they'd be stuck here. And with what had happened not that long ago across the board, it definitely deserved their full attention.]

I know Jane's working on a machine of some sort. I don't know what it actually does other than possibly make a loud noise.

[/shrug]

Although with how things seem to work around here, getting to the bottom of it all will be easier said than done.

[Given that some of the best scientists (in his world, at least) have been working at it for months and still have very little to show for it, Steve's in agreement that cracking the secret of Wonderland won't be easy. But maybe it's a problem that science can't solve.

Not that any scientist worth their salt would want to hear that, but sometimes you've got to think outside the box.

The mention of a new machine does sound promising, though. Darcy doesn't seem to have a lot of information, so Steve will just have to hope he can catch Jane and ask her about it personally. She's a bit more insular than Darcy, though, caught up in her work and all.]

I know that there really shouldn't be such a thing as magic, but that's the case where we're from. We might have to look at things from a different angle, here.

[Unlike his science friends, Darcy might not dismiss him out of hand. Steve takes another bite of pie and another sip of coffee as he awaits her answer.]

Yeah, I feel like they wouldn't have lumped us with a crap ton of people from other worlds if they didn't want us to work together to try and find a way out. See what else people have to offer that might be shiny and new.

[She's definitely open to the concept of thinking outside the box, the box having been thrown away about 3 years ago when Thor fell from the sky. Amazing how many brain doors that opens when crap like that happens.

This place? Just another reason to keep that particular box in the dumpster.]

Besides, there's a lot of things that shouldn't be true that exist. It's just gonna be a matter of getting certain people on board with getting creative. It's all gotta come from somewhere in here... Like an energy source or something.

[Look at her having picked up a thing or two from her time with Jane and Erik.]

[As expected, Darcy's on board with the idea of changing the way that they tackle this particular problem. Obviously the way they're used to isn't working, so it's time to change their thinking and see if they come up with a different result.

Granted, a lot of this goes over his head too. He knows the basics of most scientific concepts, but go in-depth enough and he starts to lose his footing.]

Maybe we can convince our scientist friends to start working with people from worlds that are more based in magic.

[It'll take some work, though, given how stubborn they all are. Darcy is more or less Jane's best friend, though, so maybe she'll have some luck there.]

You work on Jane, I'll work on Bruce? [Steve hides a smile behind another bite of pie, and the next thing he knows, it's all gone.]

[Convincing the scientists was easier said than done, especially where Jane is concerned, but it's definitely doable. She nods, running a hand through her hair as she starts thinking about ways she might be able to spin it to pull Jane off of her machine and chuck her out into the world to mingle with some of the people from other dimensions and universes.]

You got it. Although I make no promises... I may need to bribe her to get her away from the basement.

[She takes the empty plate from in front of him, adding it to the growing pile in the sink. Meh... Those could be dealt with later.]

[Bribe her, huh? Steve laughs briefly at that and then stands when the plate is taken away, though then he notices the pile of dishes.

Darcy already said that he didn't owe her anything for the free coffee and food, but that looks like some small way in which he can contribute. Steve isn't above dish-washing.

He nods to the sink.] Want some help with those? It's the least I could do.

[Her gaze drifts over to the sink, thinking about the offer for a moment before giving a casual shrug.]

Nah, I can handle 'em. I'm not sure how I feel about the mugs that came with the place so I think I'm gonna take the time to look over them while I wash them. But, thanks for the offer - another time. I even got these adorable aprons.

[Darcy really isn't giving him much of a chance to help out, but Steve decides that he probably shouldn't push it. This coffee shop is her project and if she would rather do it all herself, then that's her choice.]

I look forward to seeing that. [He quirks a smile.] I should probably go get washed up, though, so maybe another time. [He's going to stink up her brand new place with his post-workout musk otherwise.]

Good luck with all this. [With a nod, he starts toward the door.]
